does anybody know how much a tow bar fitted, for a C200K sports coupe will cost from the dealers, also if I get a non merc tow bar is my warranty invalid

Dont laugh, but my detachable towbar for C220CDi estate was over £600 dealer fitted

Hi, i got an genuine witter Tow Bar Fitted to my C250 Estate For £160, all the guy came out to see me!

I have a Brink with detachable swan neck, identical to genuine parts. Cost me £200 and I fitted it.

Towsure do the cheapest DIY bar, at a guess under £100. Even they will pick up the gap in manufacturers warranty if something went wrong. The only cautionary 'tail' is that the electrics could be a problem. Modern cars tend to have very delecate systems which do not take kindly to bodged type jobs.

If you do go to other than the dealers, make sure they are a reputable firm Witter have the knowledge and know-how and will most definately pick up where your warranty leaves off.

are they easy to fit, I am an engineer but have no knowledge of cars,

Very easy,

all you need is a set of ramps to reverse the car up, a decent socket set, and a few other basic tools. A torque wrench is advisable, as is a someone to help (make coffee etc).

Make sure whoever supplies you with the tow bar electrics knows exactly which car you are fitting them to. Follow the instructions to the letter and you will not go wrong. (A wee bit of auto electrical knowledge helps).

Total time for you do do it is about 4 hours (taking your time).

Give it a go, you can save a fortune.

Try www.towsure.com for everything needed including detatchable bars.

Actually bolting the towbar on is not hard, removing the bumber and exhaust and drilling the pre-marked holes is not so easy. You may or may not have to remove the bumper, I did'nt but it would have been easier if I had. When drilling the holes, remove the spare wheel, dont want to be drilling through that.

You will need a full 7 way bypass relay as MB have bulb warning failure for all bulbs.
Also note that when metering for the right connections the power has to be on if your car has multiplex wiring, i.e. CAN system. Almost certainly anything '98 on has. If you meter with no power you will obtaing ground readings on all the lamp connections.

There's nothing difficult but it's a bit time consuming to do it right.
I also have a Brink detachable that the local towbar dealer said would be £600 fitted.

Do it yourself and save a lot.
