In need of some new tyres due my rears being at the limit after about 15k miles I had to choose between someDunlop 901s, Pirelli Rossos and Toyo Proxes T1-R. Fitter highly recommended the T1-Rs so I'm giving them a try. At 225/45/17 he reckoned that no tyres will give more then 20k and that 15k is more realistic mileage. I better remember to rotate front and back next year! London today was wet, and when I was driving through Epping in the late/early hours of Saturday/Sunday it was bucketing down so a good test for the tyres especially seeing as I don't have ABS (currently). They gripped very well giving me lots of feel, the back always felt planted :D and the braking was very good feeling similiar to my old tyres (Falken 451s) in the dry. They seem to be as good as the fitter said, I'll update if I found out otherwise.

Nice report. Comparing Toyos Falkens is fair enough as they are both budget tyres, but it's interesting the fitter advised you towards the Proxes instead of P-Zero. I can only think the P-Zero would be the more sticky tyre. Was ultimate performance your requirement?

I hope there was a big price gap between the P-Zeros and the Proxes or I fear his advise was profit based.

Your car and the tyre size I think 15K is optimistic too!

Well Graham I would only have to have paid ~£30 more for the Rossos. He said the BEST tyres were some Michelins but that they were around £170+ each and that they would wear much quicker than anything else. He did tell me that the Toyos were better than the Rossos although I'm sure the Rossos would have looked . I'll update when I get some decent mileage under them. All I can say for sure now is that they're better than the Falkens. Off to test them then

The Toyos get a good write up, but if they perform better than the Rosso's they really are among the top few. £30 a tyre is a substantial enough saving in my book if there is no comprimise in quality.

was it the michelin pilot sports that wear faster?

That's what I assumed rightly or wrongly. That's the tyre lots of dealers recommend, and they are about £170 a go in those sizes. I thought they were a harder waering tyre though. The marketing aims them at higher mileage drivers!

EDIT: Ignore me, talking mumbo. Checked my facts and I am thinking of the Premacy.

Rethinking it over I think the Rossos were about £50 more for all four, I went with the Toyos on his recommendation. I know the T1-Rs are a new tread pattern, most of the reviews I've seen are based on the T1-Ss. The Michelins he showed me were the Pilot Sports I think, the tread on them looked half worn already! They looked like a track day tyre to me.

How much tread is there on the Toyos? Do you get more than 8mm to start with?

I've had Toyos on a few cars and think they are very good, I wouldn't call them a budget tyre at all! Have also had P zero's and they were pretty poor, especially in the wet.

Best Wet weather tyre I have had are Goodyear F1's.

Toyos have standard tread, looks like 8mm is about right. The Michelins the fitter pointed out to me start out low on tread for some reason. I can only assume they were a trackday tyre.
