My Insurance company wont cover me for theft until I get a Tracker fitted 0- they were the cheapest by a country mile so I think I'll have to get one fitted - just how hard are them to install DIY?? $tealer wants £300...I have a 2001 CLK 320 Vert.

£300 for installation or does that include the unit? If it does it's a good deal really.

I'm with Privilege and the £300 quote was for the fitting only - they want £500 for the whole shooting match!!

RAC Trackstar or Tracker will do it directly for less (£400 all in i think) - not sure if they sell the units seperately though.

To qualify for the insurance, the fitter of the tracking device will issue a certificate of fitment. You cannot just fit a tracking device yourself because you won't be in a position to issue the certificate of fitment.

I cannot see a way around this.

Having seen the hokey-kokey job that most of these authorised fitters do (pass the scotchlok, please!), I would have far greater faith in the reliability of my own fitment, but the industry isn't geared for home fitment. Having seen a few DIY disaster programmes, I can see it from their point of view, too.

I would change insurance company!

Having owned and lost an Audi S3 courtesy of Tracker I second the comment made by Alps: Get a new insurance company!

At the risk of hijacking a thread how did you lose a car with tracker fitted??

Professional car thieves can nick ANY car they want and tracker is NOT a deterrent to them!

You not read any of the tracker threads yet on this forum discussing them...???

R2D2, After the nice men in the balaclava took the keys from my hand, I rang tracker whilst my wife rang the police - that's how I lost a car fitted with a Tracker. Admittedly the first time that car was stolen Tracker got it back, but when it didn't come back the second time I decided £300 outlay + susbscription of £100/ year for £30/year reduction in insurance just wasn't worth it.

to be honest - Im not that bothered if the car gets stolen BUT I'll be very bothered if it gets stolen and I;m not insured!!! So does anyone knwo of anywhere (Herfordshire?) who can fit and give me the necessary certificate to keep the insurance people happy......

Which insurance company is this and for what reason are you unable to switch?

I'd be surprised if no one will cover you without - is the premium significantly lower to warrant the cost?

Will

my company was privilege too and they wanted me to put a tracker on my
e500 or no insurance - I said "seeya!" and went with admiral (just as competitive and no need for a tracker).

R2D2, trackers can only be fitted in a number of locations, the first thing a pro will do, is check these locations when taking the car and making the traker useless! There was a warehouse found last year in Barking with 60 prestigous and sports supercars in it, 50 % had trackers removed (so the article said), and the only reason they found it was when they folllowed one of the cars after it had been stolen!

Ive spoken to my indi who used to be the tracker installer for the MB in Hampsted, and he said they were good for the common theif, but would never catch out the pro. (hence more reason NOT to put a tracker installed sticker on your car!)

I don't think you can DIY it. I got mine direct from Tracker. From memory it was £299 for the kit and installation.

www.tracker.co.uk

I was pleased though that when I renewed my insurance this year I got approx £250 discount because I had Tracker.

PS: Try www.quotelinedirect.co.uk. I've always had the lowest quotes from them and their service was very good when I had my car stolen last year.

I want to know the tracker install locations to remove it once my lease is up.

anyone got any ideas?

fuzzer, you could be a wannabe car thief asking that question!! ;)

I`ll talk to my mate and PM the likely install locations for you. He told me before but have forgotton!
