How do I check my transmision oil?
CLK 320 1998
Want to do a full check over and change any oils that need doing. I cant find a dip stick for the gearbox? :dk:

Think you will find there isn't one fitted. There will be a tube with a cap on somewhere near the bulkhead - you can get them off E-Bay or ask nicely and someone near to you may be able to lend you one! I take it this is an auto? Has it done more than 60k? Ever had the ATF changed? If not, then you would be best getting it changed!

Had my clk320 cab(2002)gearbox oil/filter changed by Tony Purslow(guildford) in december, they offer 40% off of labour & 15% off of parts so if you are not sure/happy about doing it yourself then get a specialist/indi to do it:thumb:

Yes its done 138k, whats the ATF?
Is it expencive, is it a diy job?

Now I spoke to a "specialist today" and he said if the car had been driven leisurley the car would adapt to that style of driving, is this true or is he talking cobblers?

the kickdown is a little slow, but the rest of the gearbox seems fine.

ATF - Automatic Transmission Fluid - if it hasn't been changed, get it changed! These boxes were originally 'Sealed For Life' but not anymore.... Will cost roughly £170 from a good indie, £300 from MB.

A lot of the MB's have a 'learning' gearbox which will adapt to your driving style. This can be reset by either disconnecting the battery for 20-30 minutes (not recommended if you don't have the radio code!) or by the following procedure -

1) Ignition key to Position 1
2) Press accelerator pedal to floor and count to five then release
3) Turn off ignition but do not remove key
4) Wait minimum of two minutes then drive car as normal.

You should feel a difference especially if the previous owner 'drove like a granny' lol!!

I have checked this "re-set" with the Star and it does nothing. The only way to re-set the adaptation data properly is with a Star :thumb:

My normal driving mode is definately not of the 'hang the tail out' variety and the gearbox responds appropriately. I have noticed after a bout of occasional enthusiastic driving the 'box hangs on to lower gears longer for some time afterwards. I assume it's learned my new style and behaves accordingly.

If you want the gearbox to respond in a sportier manner just drive in one and it will soon get the message. No reset sequence needed.

The previous owner was an old granny :p

This is what the chap at my local specialist said, basically give it some beans and the car will realise its now in the hands of a driver not a saga lout.

He quoted me £60 at a local gearbox specialist to change the oil, as they dont do it as they haven't got the pumpey majiggy thing.

if i buy one of these, can it be left in, or do I have to remove it during normal driving?

A proper ATF change with the proper Mb fluid including a filter and gasket from me is £165 inclusive.

Expect to pay around this amount. £60 is way too cheap to be using the proper oil. Its nearly a tenner a litre.

I have just had a propper quote from an auto gearbox place in swindon, £100 + VAT
