Hi,depends which model/year but most of the experts on here advise around every 40k/4 years.

Dealers partially drain the transmission fluid, and refill - partial because the drain hole is not positioned in such a way that it can be emptied in full.

Some specialists will remove the pan, drain in full, wipe clean, install a new filter and generally make it shiny again. Search for a 'How to' thread on this forum from member BlackC55

Thanks , on the E220 CDI . Out of interest what is carried out?

The actual process can vary,i.e. mb as a rule will only drain refill the autobox(around 4ltrs)& fit a new filter etc,a good independant will do the same job(& for less) & in addition will drain/refill the torque converter(about another couple of ltrs atf).

Ant, you have a E220 cdi. Would that be a w210 or W211? What year is the car?

Best to complete the User cp to give details of what you drive...and if you don't have a Merc, then a little more detail when asking your question.
