hi again, cant seem to work this out yet, but how do i know what quantity of ATF should be in my box?
if i dump my dipstick into the tube before a drain and fill up to the same level after a drain, whos to say the amount is correct?
the dipstick i have coming is an aftermarket one with 10, 20 ,30 ,40 and so on increments but that tells me nothing?
I cant just pour in 6 or 7 ltres and hope thats correct.
Does the genuine Merc dipstick have the correct high/low measures and should i get that or go to a dealer to get it measured?
Any input appreciated again.
Thanks Karl

They have a set level at cold temperatures and a set level at hot temperatures. You do need it to be the correct length of dipstick though.

1220mm seems to be yours.Screenshot_20241220-082544.png

ok thanks , assuming its the correct length, i could say @80 degrees it should read between 10 and 12?
id better check that its 1220 long cause i remember seeing 900 something too, even though it did list my wagon.

Just go off the temperature side of things , the levels rise and fall as the oil cools and heats ,due to expansion. Make sure to move the gear selector through each gear for 20 seconds , starting and ending in park. A scanner would also tell you autobox fluid temperature

Just checked and yes it is 1220 mm long one. yay.had me worried for a sec.

The dipstick length has nothing to do with it buddy , the black triangle at the top of the black dipstick plastic section on the end hits a restriction above the gearbox sump , this allows the black measuring section to read the fluid level from above . It is normal to have a lot of dipstick hanging out the top of the dipstick tube in the engine bay .
The atf level is measured when hot after a 30 minute drive , with the engine running , in park on a level surface

ok thanks , i thought if it was too short i get possibly a wrong measurement, but thats good to know.
might be waiting a few days to say the least till it arrives in NZ.
