Just to update you all with my experience,
Just after fitting an Italian tuning box after much research and have to report that all is well, the box itself and associated wiring is very well put together and robust and the connectors are a direct fitment for my S210 320cdi.
The box itself is adjustable for performance or economy and after a few days of driving has completely transformed the car, acceleration is much more rapid and smooth and no issues what so ever with black smoke.
Many of you will say that because it only costs £50 it is just a resistor in a box and cant possibly work but research into this has shown that it uses a full 64 bit microprocessor electronic box, I figured that for the price it is worth a punt and from what I can see well worth it.
Haven't started to look at mpg yet but will monitor this over the next month and update with result. :bannana:

Well just got back from holidays with the car a very impressed with the mpg, did around 2700 miles in 2 weeks and had to fill up 6 times. Managed to get from northern Ireland to Dover on 1 tank of fuel alone, and all this with me, the wife and 4 kids in the car with all of our luggage and a roof box, I'd say that's pretty impressive for a S210 320cdi with 200k on the clock and was doing 75mph on the motorways

So, for those of us ignorant to the capacity of your cars tank, just what was the overall MPG?

Interested as I have just covered over 3500miles to the south of Spain driving my neighbours brand new LR Freelander2 with four up and roof box packed solid, cruised at legal max on all autoroutes and it returned 28.9MPG.......not too bad for a high speed barn!

it has a 70 litre tank and the trip showed 45mpg going down but dropped to 41 coming back on Thursday as there was a stiff wind. before best I could get on a Motorway run was 37mpg, and we where traveling a 85mph in france as the limits are higher, Managed 470 miles from Calais towards La Rochelle before had to stop again

Stranraer to Dover is only 500 miles so you should be able to do this easily in a 320cdi.

70 litres is 15.4 gallons. 470 miles on 15.4 gallons is just over 30mpg...

Six fills would be about 90 gallons...so again, only 30 mpg!!

Something not right about your figures...that mpg is a disaster.

Where did you get the tuning box?

its called italian tuning box, before I fitted it I was getting worse, would only of got to london on a full tank, I thought that was good for a fully loaded s210 320cdi with a roof box travelling a high speeds

car drives fine, has just been serviced, on the way back it used a lot more fuel due to high head winds, was only getting 400 miles on a tank travelling at about 83 in france

what would cause the high fuel usage if there was a problem?

My trip was indicating 42-45mpg for the trip

The only way to measure consumption accurately is to note the actual fuel purchased and then divide this into the miles driven.

I have driven 400 miles this week, including a 205 mile round trip to Dublin airport and back, the rest around town....I've used...50 litres...so about 36 mpg.

Did have to change one of the rear wheels for the spare as it had completely wore the inside edge to the metal and the other side is toed out, I have replaced the hub top arm and toe arm but still cant get it to come in enough, would this be the cause of the high fuel?
