Have notced a few failed turbo threads, andit seems to have something to do with the EGR allowing muck to clog the moving vanes/actuator - One person mentions running a C220 Cdi with EGR turned off, how can this be done??

BTW does the 270 Cdi have a variable vane turbo or a traditional wastegate thingy??

I would have thought the amount of EGR could be controlled by using the star diagnostics program.

All the new turbos are variable. They still have a wastegate as it performs a different task.

Egr- Wastegate-boost

egr and wastegate boost is controlled through the cdi ecu and is measured by various sensors but mainly by the boost pressure sensor.
I have not seen any adjustment in the parrameters in cdi.If you have crap in your egr system or turbo you are more likely to have a engine problem. Try removeing the egr valve and pipes that link to the exhaust and see if it restricked by carbon. Is the engine useing oil?

EGR valves fail more on diesel than petrol, when the fail, they normally fail in the partly open possition, this will cause lumpy idle. They are vacuam devices that open when the engine is running light, Its a waste of time trying to clean them as after some 65k miles the spring gets weak. the engine will not be as economical with it removed.

You know, sometimes when mine is cold in the morning, it'll drive fine but when I get to some lights and stop, it'll go lumpy. Accelerate away at it will still be lumpy up to about 10mph, where the engine revs will suddenly pick up (as though it dropped a gear) and it'll be fine again.

I'd thought it might be the MAF but this might be the problem as well.

I'm going to have to go down there and have a sniff around.

My 220cdi puts out a lot of black smoke on acceleration. I took out the egr and it was full of soot, 5mm thick on all surfaces. Cleaned it out and inspected the valve which appeared to seat o.k. Put it back in but blanked the vacuum line to it. On a long run the car was fine for the first 20 miles then the power just faded away quite significantly. Removed the blank on the vacuum line and the power came back, unfortunately the black smoke came back aswell.

This will be the ECU detecting the lack of EGR so goes into limp home mode and drops the turbo wastegate.
