I'm not getting started on the legalities of this as I would think you could guess my view.

As to the insurance question, third parties involved would be covered.

I think I share a similar view to yourself - ie, strongly disaprove.

What I wanted to be clear on was the 'facts', not 'opinions'.

Thanks,

Will

yes i dissagree (obviosuly) with watching films/tv on the move.

however... i have connected DVD to my COMAND unit and it works 'on the move'....

this is so i can see the MP3 tracklist on my comand screen and select tracks with the remote control.... i have never played a film on the move (or at all to be honest).... but the system is able to do it - surly that isnt illegal... its only illegal to actually be found using it surly....

it passed MOT fine :)

Ok to stop your insurance company not paying out if the passenger was watching a DVD on the move, simply switch off the system if you have an accident. Easy...........

Oh and check out ebay for how to make it work on the move, loads of adverts on there to getting it to work and the people even come to your house to change it.

After starting this thread I would like to say the following:

This was not for my wife to watch well diving but the passenger, my daughter. When i agreed to install/buy the TV my wife couldn’t have cared less, but boys and toys. For the money we paid for this option I found it staggering that it can’t work once moving. Basically it’s useless my children will never be left in the car on their own and I doubt if I’ll get in it more then one or twice this year let alone be left sitting in the car. What a pointless option.

Secondly. To be honest I hadn’t give it any real deliberation and never discussed it with my wife. However after reading the posts I don’t think I will pursue this matter any further. The bottom line is although I did never intend it for the diver to watch, I never give any consideration to the diver being distracted by the TV. To sum up the safety of my family and other road users far outweighs the any benefits of TV on the roll.

Not sure if I should be telling you lot this  but I have a switch installed in a very hard to find place that just cuts the earth to my Pioneer unit to enable/disable quickly :D

And as the same as silversaloon use it for mp3 track lists etc not for watching films.

I have a rear screens for the kids as the Pioneer unit will allow the rear output to play even when moving.

P.S. I think all navigation units (With screens) distract you more that a TV/DVD as you keep refering to it for the direction you are moving in, more often that you would be a TV or DVD.

The insurance company cuts the policy off at the point that you didn't tell them you made the change... "But I wasn't using it" will not help you :D You shouldn't have had it in the first place.

Zooman, I have a similar problem with my daughter. There is a piece of software that you can get that will compress a DVD film to 100meg so it can be watched on an Ipaq (same sort of size as the command screen) this might help you better I will find the link and post it :)

I made the assumption that the insurance cancelation was total based on an incident I had a few years ago when the insurance company tried to wriggle out of a fault claim based on the fact that the driver of the car should not have been driving it... It took months for my company to get it sorted and I had left before it was concluded :( We even tried to involve the police at one point (not that they were interested in it )

EDIT !!

http://www.pqdvd.com/

there the ipaq product :D

This made me smile I had a HP iPaq until I lost it and I feel lost with out it. One day it was just gone still can’t figure out where I lost it, but I’ve booked marked the link for further reference as when I replace as I think that its on the cards.

Regarding the TV I wrote to the dealership today requesting a good will payment towards the TV after misselling the upgrade. I’ve politely informed them if their feel unable to refund the upgrade in part that I’ll take them to county court and allow a district judge to deicide the matter. I could of spent the money on a nice holiday.

This is one mod I can't believe the insurance company would ever find, unless it was in the police report or something.

Its not difficult to find it at all  assesor turns up to look the car over in the body shop. "Ooh look its got a tft screen in the dash better check that is installed correctly..." pops a DVD in to the drive and releases the hand brake... now If you have an Alpine, Pioneer, Kenood <a.n. other> model then it should be connected to the handbrake and releasing the break should break the circuit and switch the dvd off... If you have had it "modded" then it won't and you will be in trouble... with Command its equally simple as you pull the unit out and check for the piggy back unit that will need to be installed to sort out the speed sensor to play the disk...

Amount of work in each case: less than five minutes, catching a driver with a frigged system priceless :D

Now I was in a major car hi fi store this morning trying to get the next bit for my own install (an Alpine Ipod interface) and while I was having a chat with the guy about changing the head unit to a tft to make searching for tunes easier, I asked about insurance problems, and what the screen will show me when the car is moving and the chap just said don't worry if it doesn't give the track listings then we will just move the handbreak sensor    "But won't that cause insurance problems ???" I asked "Not if you don't tell them he replied"

How many people are driving total loss vehicles because of information like this !!!!

Surely whether you are looking at a moving map on a satnav screen or track listings/DVD film you are still being distracted from driving.

Where is the difference
