I have just bought a new flatscreen for the bar. It has a usb port and I was wondering if there is a device available that I could plug in to it to make a wi-fi connection from my laptop?

It will tell you in the manual/website if the tv has this option.

If you're thinking a WiFi connection could make it stream content from your laptop then most likely not. I'd say it's ,most likely that the USB port is to view contentor media from a USB stick (or possibly a USB hard drive).

However, all of the functionality depends upon what type of TV it is.

Many newer TV's do have WiFi capability or options including the ability to stream files from Media Servers / DLNA sources.

Some will read hard drives others wont...

Depends on the make and model. Early models merely used the USB to update the firmware-- later modelswith better software did in fact have WiFi streaming capability but if it is a SONY it may need a specific [ Sony!!] USB stick which was about £70 irrc.
