I've noticed tyre prices can vary greatly from fitter to fitter. I also appreciate larger firms have more buying power; but does anyone know what the "mark up" on a tyre is?

not much really..

most small garages will only mark up around £10-15 per tyre and this usually will include cost of fitting. Its a very competitive market - to me, almost not worth doing.

The bigger nationals make on the bulk buying, so their margins will be higher..

50% retail working downwards for trade, very popular sizes and local/internet competition, and some of the national chains are owned by tyre companies direct.

I found that the best deals can be had by shopping online (e.e. blackcircles) and have the tyres sent to your local fitter for fitting. This not only ensures low price, but also allows you to choose whichever tyres you want instead of being confined to whatever brand/model your local tyre fitter happens to have in stock.

An exception is Costco, who always had good prices on Michelins.

With regards to margins, work-out the maths for the larger national chains - when they have a 'buy 4 get 1 free' offer, this means that they make a killing on the price of a single tyre if you don't buy 4....

Yup, spot on in my experience too. Always struck me as strange to take an experienced mechanic off his job to fit tyres for next to nothing...:dk:
