Found this while rambling around the web-

LA PLATA, N.M. -- A 19-year-old woman caught fire after she was fiddling with a cigarette lighter as she pumped gas, authorities said.

Brianna Sanchez was at a Sun Dial gas station with her boyfriend Friday night when the incident occurred, said Sgt. Jackie Budd, a spokesman with the San Juan County Sheriff's Office.

Budd called the incident a "freak accident" and said there was no reason to believe otherwise.
He said witnesses reported the woman was casually pumping gas and that she had a lighter in her hand. That's when flames shot out of the gas tank.
The woman and the immediate area caught fire. A person at the scene put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher.

Sanchez was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center with burns to her face and upper torso. Budd didn't know the extent of her injuries.

Just a reminder, don't try this at home kids.

Petrol is pretty sneaky because only the invisible vapour ignites ;)

Agreed Shude and I would not for minute expect everyone to know this but it's still a pretty dumb thing to play with a lighter in a petrol station..

On the news a couple of months ago there was some CCTV footage of a blonde haired woman smoking a cigarette whilst refuelling at an American petrol station and the same thing happened there.

Many years ago I had to do a fire fighting course and an instructor placed a long glass tube at an angle above a small bowl of petrol. He lit a match just above the glass tube and........ pooof, the vapour instantly ignited.

Yes its the vapour that goes up not the liquid, I was only 17 when I neighbour syphoned some fuel during the Suez crisis while smoking, he had no coupon worries after that

I can vouch for the petrol vapours igniting.
I once started a garden rubbish fire with a gallon of petrol, it was damp and I was only young, and stupid.
I was stood 10 feet away when i threw a match onto the pile of rubbish.
The singed eyebrows, bodyhair and very red skin taught me to respect flamable liquids.

This is probably as close as you can get to a Darwin award without actually qualifying!

Perhaps its worth a vote to see if we can identify what would actually be the most stupid way to kill yourself..

How about using a hairdryer in the bath?

I was just going to suggest the Darwin award website. Maybe she is a honorary member

You can imagine the womens comment, ' It says no smoking doesn't say you cant light it'
DOH

We have an old lady that is suing the local railway company because the level crossing barrier hit her arm? :) There is a loud audible warning ages before the barriers drop, but this woman elected to ignore the warnings and merely complains when the barrier hits her arm.

Ha! Old dears, have to love them. Particularly the deaf ones. Whilst responding to a call today I turned down a busy high street type area and noticed an old dear waiting to cross. Because she clearly hadn't looked/seen me I prepared to stop. Despite the lights, sirens, battenburg and horn she failed to notice me and crossed right in front. I crawled past- It was only as I had just passed that she jumped a foot in the air. Delayed reactions if you will
