Who still uses cash?

"Customers of Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland will soon lose the ability to deposit their cheques at any of the 11,500 Post Office branches.

From December 31 this year, Lloyds Banking Group will withdraw this service for all customers

Didn't know you could pay cheques in that way. I guess a huge majority use the phone apps to do it but you do need a smartphone of course.

The cheque paying in feature on my Barclays phone app is one of its best features....dead simple. Picture of front and back of cheque, enter amount, pick which account its going into, send. When its cleared tear the cheque up. I usually keep them for a month or two to be honest......

The Barclays app also allows face recognition on my Android phone, whereas the Lloyds one doesn't (iPhone only)

And good enough reception for the smartphone to work - not always a given.

As an aside, I bought a guy a beer the other day. It was only conceivable because I had the cash in my pocket (outside in the beer garden, going inside to pay by card would have been resisted by my friend (as I wasn't drinking) but cash at hand enabled it as the cash was in the barmaids hand before anything else could be done). Cash is still good for certain things - and thanking people who've done me a favour.

I can never get the face recog to work on my Samsung.....since it works of my wifes phone which is exactly the same model/year that may say more about my weird face than the phone!!!:D

On my previous phone I always had to sign in to banking with a PIN or characters x/y/z/ from a password as the fingerprint recognition hardly ever worked. Face recognition worked for unlocking the phone but wasn't supported for apps (I assume the selfie camera wasn't high enough resolution). Everything works fine on the one I have now, other than the Lloyds app not allowing face recognition!

I don't do cash work at all now (taxi) but a good mate does and the amount of work he gets off the rank because so many drivers refuse card work is huge, there are times he's done several card paying jobs and returned to the rank before the "cash only" guys have moved.

In my town the taxi rank is a bit 'hit and miss' ie: sometimes full , often deserted and a few cabs have a cash only attitude , a few weeks back the driver had set off on our fare when he turned to me stating that this was a cash only journey .

As I normally pay taxi drivers in cash it was not a problem , but then it occurred to me that he had driven from the front of the rank (lost his place) before stating his cash only 'business' , I can tell you now if any of the younger generation that I know were put in that position he would have had to stop and let them out as none of them carry cash.

Or......he might suddenly find that his card reader was working after all 🤔......

My guess ? he spots someone 'mature in age' and assumes the old duffer will have a few groats or sovereigns about his person.

So you would all be happy with a digital ID system like |in China, that links your card and all accounts like shopping, social media, banking e.t.c? Because i have just been to three retailers. last week, two had nothing but cards and the last one a major DIY store only had one till for cash. When i complained the whole queue was looking at me like i was insane and one of them actually said, who uses cash these days, No one does .
Imagine giving a bank, law enforcement, or the government total control over your own money. They can freeze , unfreeze and f you belong to a certain group of people that are always suspect and more likely to be under investigation for stuff real or perceived, you could be left with no access to funds while an investigation is being carried out, like Semper.

My wife & son are at a sports stadium in Portugal for 2 weeks and the on-site restaurant/bar/food vendors/etc. are all 'no card payments'.

Luckily she did take some euros, just in case.

I have friends who run a small business (not food related)

When customers pay by cash it never goes near the bank (they do accept card and phone)
It goes to pay other local businesses they trade with or just shop with like the butchers etc.

The same notes might find their way back to them over a month.....

That sounds a good idea, for small businesses. 🙂👍

I’ve no problem with law enforcement agencies controlling the cash of drug dealers. Same goes for tax evaders.

Of course. They came for drug dealers and i did not mind as i am not a drug dealer. Then they came for the dissenters and i did not mind as i am not a dissenter., then they came for the protesters and i don't mind as i am not a protester. Until they came for me and there was no one left. If you were around during the poll tax riots or any other protest, , all the government or law enforcement needed to do will have been to just video/record everyone protesting or walking the streets. Link your face to the digital ID, and suddenly then next day your account is frozen, your car wont start because it has been switched off or your license revoked for 3 months e.t,c. It can happen. Digital ID is already mistakenly used and shared to identify shoppers to be banned from shops. it always start with the good intentions and then the power is then used for control. Semper was no drug dealer. He just looked like the kind of person that would be profiled.
