Hi all

For reasons I can't yet divulge, I am involved in the return of an A160 auto (52 plate old shape).

It's not one I sold btw. We need to recover it from place a to destination b which is circa 10 miles. I am a long way from either so working remotely. I know some automatics can be towed short distances but I don't know if this applies to the fwd A. It is a runner but isnt taxed, mot'd or insured, we will be recovering it for a pre-booked MOT ;)

Can anyone definitively tell me if they are towable? We have trailer/truck access and logistical problems so clutching at straws.

Anyone? We're desperate here.

The car was lent out whilst in probate. Fines etc etc mean we need to get it back urgently from the "loose-moralled" relative.

Has anyone an A class handbook to hand ?

My contact at the main dealer was useless, his answer was don't tow over 20mph, no idea for how many miles, engine on or off etc etc (i presume he was knackered without an actual car to plug his laptop into to check......)

I think the answer may depend on which variant of automatic that car has.

AFAIK some are conventional autos with torque converter and others manuals with automatic clutch actuation.

I presume you wish to tow with all 4 wheels still on the road, rather that lift front two up?

IIRC if it is towed with any of the wheels on the road it must be insured, the pre booked MOT should remove the need for tax and MOT which otherwise would also be required.

Hi John, If you insure it say, as one of your fleet of vehicles, you can drive it to a pre booked MoT. There is no stipulation, as far as I am aware, of how far you can go. I know a guy who drove from Scotland to Preston to a pre booked MoT. As previously stated no road tax required.

the problem is the ownership of the car prevents it being insured ie it is in probate

In my mind the only way is a trailer.

I think in this instance I'd probably swallow the £100 or so for a local garage to recover it legally by low loader or on a trailer.

just looked at dayinsure.com, could be a possibility under their terms as a "borrowed" vehicle. £20 for a day. Hopefully, seemples :) Will advise
