Urgent advice needed

We are looking to buy a C Class estate year 06/07. There is one we may be looking at tomorrow that we like. The fella selling it is going to trade it in on Thursday for £6000 so I believe anything he can get above that he would be happy with. The only thing is for us it's a C280 which is a 3.0 engine so fairly uneconomical but then that dosnt really bother us. The tax thing is a little off putting as its £460 a year.

What I would like to know from all of you experts is what do you think of the engine in the C280? is it one of the better ones and is there anything I should be looking out for when looking it over and test driving it.

The balance shaft in the engine suffers with wear. Plenty of info on it on the web

Great engines, very smooth, powerful... but as Olly says, the engine does suffer from the balance shaft issue.

Its a big job if not been done.. may or may not come up in your ownership!
