So I was looking for a usb cable to connect my camera to my pc to upload a picture of the clouds.... and I find this in the box

Any clue what its for? I can't find mention of it in the camera manual (Pentax K100d), and connecting it to my camera and router just brings up a (non-accesible) tsclient in my network explorer...

Ideas?

Have you tried connecting it from the camera to the ethernet port on your computer?

I think that's a wrong cable put in by mistake. You should have a miniUSB to USB cable. No point in connecting a USB Camera output to an ETHERNET hub?? you should also have been supplied a video cable. I have also come across a booster wireless link unit for digital SLR's --- unless its to link to that?

only things i can think of are ..

1) new type of console cable , ones ive seen up till now have been RJ45 - rs232 but might be new.

2) part of a KVM

3) usb extender over cat5

Its deffo interesting :) if you find out let us know. I really like cables :D

No change... maybe I need a driver/program... I'll need to dig the box/disk out of the loft...

I have a microUSB to USB cable, as well as a video cable and cable for the remote. A quick google pulls this up as a microUSB cable...

I don't have anything that would use a console; I've been wanting to buy a KVM-switch in months and don't have anything that I can think of that would need an extender; so I don't think its any of those (unless I have a random cables from who-knows what - which isn't unthinkable)

Good thoughts though!

its not maybe going into a power over ethernet adaptor or a mains charger or something.

Its just a modular plug after all.

It's the control lead from an APC UPS to PC.

EDIT: Maybe not - just open up the picture, and saw it's the wrong end of the USB for that. Dunno.

Don't have any APC ups's at home nor at work!

I think... and this is a big guess, that it may have come with one of my external hard-drives... but I'm not totally convinced! (I would have known if I had bought a NAS drive...)
