Can anyone recommend what to use to clean rusty nuts, bolts and clips in and around the engine bay? Also in the centre of the V6 engine block there's an exposed metal part that looks corroded what can I use on that?

I have contemplated using a Dremel but I don't know which attachments to use and whether that may cause more harm than good?

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

I'd suggest you replace with new. Also consider using stainless steel bolts were practical.

Here's an non Merc engine bay I started cleaning up, not finished due to lack of time but gives you an idea of what I mean by using s/s as the previous bolts were rusty being along the front panel and rocker cover/plug cover. HTH.

Here's one where I replaced the rocker cover bolts with new originals rather than trying to clean and repaint - far better job. Again this was due to superficial rust.

P.s. sorry about the crap photos but i'm sure you get the idea.

I wouldn't use a Dremel, it'll just leave lots of scratch marks.

You can polish aluminium, but it will oxidise again quickly unless you lacquer it. You could try painting maybe?

I think JJJ is correct, replacement would give the best result and quicker.

If I was to use a dremel, I would use the buffing attachment with some metal polish. If you have both to hand, no harm giving it a go. Do not use any of the abrasive attachments as you will leave alot of scratches as pointed out already.

OK thanks guys, I will give the Dremel a miss and just try removing them and cleaning them individually for now.
