V6 CDi Brabus D6 III Aftermath....

As I don't get to drive the S211 too much nowadays I'd decided to sell the Brabus V6 D6 III Box that I had fitted, it was wasted on the missus; she could be driving an SLR and not know the difference....

I sold and fitted it on Sunday, it's new owner being very pleased.

Because I fitted the box as soon as I bought the car, I never really felt the benefit of the power upgrade, so it was going to be interesting how the car fared without it.

Having covered roughly 200 mile since removing the box, my first impressions are that it's not that noticeable; the biggest difference is 40-60mph; with the Brabus it seemed to shove and now it sort of glides.

Other than that, the revs seem to fall flat slightly sooner.

In summary, the 224 bhp that I've 'returned to' from 272 feels more than ample, if anything I certainly don't feel as though I've 'lost' 48hp.

I'm not so sure, I've driven my sister's E350CDI which doesn't have the D6(III) and to me at least it's not as quick off the line or through the rev range.

I find it quite staggering that when steadily cruising down the motorway/dual carriageways then having some goon in an A**i or B*W deciding to sit on your bumper a quick stab at the accelerator and the speed goes into 3 figures then they leave you alone :thumb:

Have you noticed any difference in your fuel consumption since removing it?

It's going to be difficult to work out because I've done 5k since fitting it and the average was 30mpg, but that was down to the wife driving it mostly local with me giving it a run out on a Sunday morning.

On the way to meet the buyer of the box on Sunday, I averaged 39.6MPG at an average of 83 *km/h*.

On the way back and at the same speeds, I averaged 40mpg but that could be due to it being more downhill than uphill.

Best I've seen on a 200-mile run was 39.9mpg... so probably about 37mpg in real terms as the computer is a bit optimistic.

Makes a massive difference uphill and downhill on mine, can get 35mpg on a run to work but 25mpg on the way back... still convinced I could be having more fun in some sort of V8 monster

Interesting this.. I felt quite a significant difference when I first had the box installed. Now I'm used to it and could do with even more power!

When mine goes in for servicing i put it back to standard, i can deff feel the difference:(, when its back home i re install the chip and all is well:thumb:

I've also never driven mine without it as it was on when I bought the car.

I've heard others describe the chip as like having a helping hand or a following wind.

From my perspective I find the 2000rpm to 3500rpm "point and squirt" very quick, but like all diesels it's all over at fairly low revs of 4250rpm in my case.

Sometimes I think "wow" and other times I question whether it's any quicker than my 204bhp IL6.

The trouble is, you can get used to things very quickly.

When on my Honda motorbike I felt that some days it was a missile and others it was a bit flat, so perhaps it's the driver, not the car/bike.

I do think, however, that the claimed extra 48bhp is a bit of marketing speak.

Before the E-Class I had a Renault Sport Megane F1 R26 (230bhp) and had it remapped which took it to 250bhp, the car did accelerate harder but in real terms I don't believe it was any quicker. IMHO, if you want a fast car, buy one.

Overtaking is quite noticable,

"IMHO, if you want a fast car, buy one" ??? people remap Porche turbos etc so not sure that has any relavance?

For a 3 litre derv (or 3.2) they are pretty quick anyway, but it does make a difference.

I can't be bothered with the extra hassle of insuring a car these days, I just like to give the registration and say no modifications, trying to find insurance is enough of a pain as it is.

^ Being bothered I rang one insurance company (Adrian Flux) and now pay less insurance for my car with the Brabus D6 box and larger wheels than any of the compare the market type insurance companies qoted.

So

I pass less insurance
My car feels quicker
I get more mpg

Whats not to like?

Do you have any proof of that with these engines?

While I would agree it must put more strain on the engine if you use the power probably 95% of the time you don't need to use it at anywhere near its maximum,

High EGT gradually kill any diesel engine. The damage is cumulative so you don't notice it happening but it is, then one day...

How high does your EGT get?

How do I measure it and whats normal and whats high?

at tickover would they not be almost the same?

You need an EGT gauge to measure it. Anything up to ~700c is fine, Mercedes use a limit of 770c but I've seen a max of 820c..and mine isn't chipped, though I blame *** for that... :p

More fuel = higher EGT.

Since having my box fitted I get an indicated 38-41mpg on the way to work if I take things steadyish, this is mainly a drive up the m27, m3 and then A34. But way below 30 if I am having fun. If the average over the tank is showing as mid 30's the real life average working out how much to topup is... 29mpg.

The on board computer is really optomistic not helped by the chip pouring more fuel in...

How accurate was the OBC before the chip was added, a chip really throws the mpg calculations out.

I may well remove the D6(II) box from mine soon, I'm not really making much use of the extra go bimbling up and down the motorway, and I doubt it's making much difference to the mpg.

Sorry to sound thick but what's EGT?
