VED

I think it's an ill conceived envy tax. £40,000 list price isn't such an expensive car these days. It will certainly catch out a few used buyers who are looking at two or three year old cars.

I think the whole VED structure is ill conceived and has been for many years. Maybe if they continue to make such a mess of it they will eventually have to scrap the whole thing and put the tax on fuel where it belongs.

Yes, agreed. It's become a nonesense. Alternatively a flat fee on every vehicle. £100 a year whether it's a Panda or a Pagani.

It is also known as 'progressive taxation'.

it is worse than the lower rate for post march 2017 registered cars of £310. Not a fan. At least personally, my road tax including this is £450 in total (on a V8). My friend has an audi SQ5 and his road tax including the additional rate is £550 (on a V6) and that makes me feel much better knowing he has a smaller engine and pays more. Pleasure through others misery... Downside is he is much richer than me so he probably doesnt feel the pinch as much as me. :(

Enjoy low VED while you can, If it all goes pear shaped the end of March and 'you know who gets' in, he will just add a zero to the end of whatever we pay now :p

Sorry for the thread hijack

Until we go electric? It needs to be kept in place for when this happens.

make someone else pay for it? :D

My mate just bought a new VW Tiguan, told the sales guy to give him a discount equivalent to the tax rate, the guy happily obliged. Perhaps it was month end and he wanted to close the sales asap. :D

Horses for courses.

Us 'posh' car enthusiasts want to change VED because it doesn't suit us.

Normal people are happy enough with the current status.

There's more of them than us.

Any moment now, one of our members who owns about a dozen cars will be along to whine about VED and SORN and insist that extra duty on fuel is the answer (as if there isn't enough duty on fuel already).

How about a hybrid owner who pays a massive £20/yr?

I pay £0 VED on my C350e - bought it just before the 'luxury' tax came in. I wasn't aware it was on the horizon at all until I started looking into the details. It helped me decide to buy a car from stock rather than risk a build running late and ending up catching me out with the extra VED.

MB's ridiculous list prices mean that a lot of people will be paying the higher tax rate having paid a lot less than full list. My new C350e (in 2015) listed at £ 45k but I paid £ 35k. That car is exempt but if you look on DriveTheDeal the same discounts can be had now

My wife's car is £0 so why does she still have to tax the car?? No money changes hands and no disc is issued to display anymore. Surely it would save a few coffers not bothering to send out reminders etc

£555 for me.
Plus expensive insurance and terrible fuel economy.
But I knew that before I bought it.
It is only going to get more expensive.

An annual check that the car is insured and has an MOT (if applicable)?

Because the VED process is as much about keeping track of cars & owners as the V5 is I think.

ETA - Dippo beat me to it :)

My BMW motorcycle is 40 this year so will be exempt from VED and MOT, although I've yet to attack the paperwork hurdle to make that happen. I've owned it for 12 years and with just insurance and servicing to pay it will be a keeper now for as long as I can ride it.
