Hi

I had a very very very slight vibration/rattle developed through the gear selector on a 1998 E300 Turbodiesel it happened between about 1500 and 2000 rpm it was barely noticable but being a perfectionist i changed the bushing on the selector that goes into box. The bushing was a few pence but the new one seemed more rigid and hard compared to the softer old one.

Anyway once changed the rattle/vibration is much worse and happens over a broader rpm range so i am tempted to but the old bushing back in.

Anyone any other ideas??

Gearbox and engine mounts are recent aprox 1 year or so and were genuine MB.

Thanks,

I'd have gone for mountings but seeing as they are new maybe not. Check the propshaft doughnuts for wear and lose bolts.

Is it engine revs or road speed dependent, and better or worse in any gears.?

In reality anything causing powertrain vibration could be transmitting through the selector, what about the belt tensioner damper.?

Hi

Doughnuts are reasonably new less than 2 years. Belt tensioner could be maybe 100K but she is silent enough at tickover usually they get noisey. The original shift bushing was a 140 part no. whereas the new one was a 210. Just felt the old rubber again out in the cold garage when i was pasing and boy it is hard too.

I will probably end up putting the old bushing back in for the meantime because it was barely noticable with it.

Problem solved

Hi

Update:

I removed the gear selector inside and low and behold there was no bushing on that end of the selector rod. It had obviously worn so much that it fell out altogether. Put in a new bushing not the correct one but will do until i get one, and all assembled and perfect again.

Delighted.
