Hi, Engine seems to have developed an oil leek, started to stain the drive.
It seems to be at the rear but is wet under there so will clean it up first.

What is the usual thing that go at 40k on the 642 engines?

I reckon it is likely to be oil from the leaking turbo inlet pipe oil seal, if there is enough of a leak it will run down the back of the engine,
remove the engine top cover and check the seal, use a torch to look below the pipe for oil laying on top of the swirl motor,
If you find oil you can either fit a new seal which will also leak, so you need to remove and clean the seal and refit with a small bead of oil resistant silicone at the back of the seal to prevent oil getting between the seal and the plastic pipe to prevent oil running from the slits in the pipe,
once you have the pipe in your hands it will be obvious what is required but you must ensure you do not get any silicone in the airflow.

I should also mention that i have also heard of a crank rear oil seal failing on this engine.

Is that hard to get at?, any pictures of what you are referring to would be good.

Just had a look at the turbo and all seems clean and dry, it does look like the rear crank seal.

Just curious what kind of mpg do you get ?

I get less than that ... around 23-25 normally, up to 30 on a long motorway run with the cruise set to 120 kph (about 75 mph). I'm sure the economy would be better at a lower speed though (big draggy vehicle).

That's just from the cluster display, I've not bothered to work it out manually.

We have both been told that our tyres are under inflated, Bill. So maybe mine have a little more pressure than yours? :)
It would be interesting to see if your MPG increased if you added 2-3psi to your tyre pressures.

Didn't you have a friend who achieved better MPG figures than we see. Maybe they have the correct tyre pressure?

My cluster say's 26 - 30 and on a run 32 ish.

I'm running at 35 psi front & back vs the plated 33 psi.

I had a friend who claimed her new Sport X was doing 40 mpg, but she later admitted she was mistaken ...

I never really got anywhere with M-B - they emailed me a scan of a technical bulletin but that said the pressure should be 2.3 bar ... which is 33 psi!

I do wonder if the rolling radius is slightly different for some of the wheel/tyre combos., giving a slightly optimistic result on the cluster display.

Yes, I'm slightly higher than plated pressure IIRC.

LOL! I think there may be some confusion between Dualiner and van tyre pressures in that the van has more load space to fill with weight, but that said, the seats in the Dualiner are very heavy in any case.

Should my 2.2 cdi be getting better miles then vs your 3L ? My tyres are at 44psi on front and rear with 225/55/17

We have 40 psi front and rear in our 2.2 but don't have a trip computer!!

is this an easy repair, as i have these symptoms

Just had a look at the turbo and all seems clean and dry, it does look like the rear crank seal.
had my main seal replaced under warranty 3 times with 20 k on the clock then my mechanic put in his lebanese special seal that he installs both on the v6 petrol and diesel. mb main rear are notorious at leaking ( well mine are )have not had a leak for 30 k . the mb part is not flash try an aftermarket item .. maybe see were the chrysler 300c boys get there's from.

My leak was an over filled auto transmission.
All fine now, so it was never the engine.

..did you have a transmission oil change or were you low on fluid.. curious because van has travelled 40k

In trying to check the oil, almost impossible to see the light red clean auto fluid on the black dip stick, I added some, just 250ml and thats what was pumped back out.
I am changing the oil this year so will get it right this time.
