Vito Problem

Hi,
I have an 06 Vito 111 Long. Shortly after having its final in warranty service (4 weeks) When driving the van at above 3000 RPM the engine management light came on and stays on until you switch off, restart and then when you need torque or go above 3000 RPM it comes on again.

I had it coupled to an independant dealer diagnostic computer today who found that on the last service the Mercedes tech had left the air filter sensor uncoupled which had then laid across the turbo and melted the insulation on the wires.

It is 4 months since it was serviced and I don't think I will successsfully argue that this was their fault even though I dont touch the engine.

I have taken the melted insulation off the wires and taped them up, reconnecting the sensor.

I thrashed it down the road and hey preston, the light comes on again and limits the engine.

Now it is 3 1/2 year old and has only done 41k. As such it has never had a fuel filter change.

Could it be that the filter is clogged, starving the engine of diesel and causing the management light to come on or something more sinister?

Cheers

Ian

Hi,
Looking at the other threads on this site, the situation sounds very similar to a MAF sensor problem.

Does the 2.2 111 have a MAF sensor? I can photo the engine if any use?

Thanks

Ian

I believe most fuel injected vehicles have a MAF sensor of some sort.

I would get your Vito on STAR first to confirm

Hi,
thanks, I had it on a star today and it picked up the melted connector. As I was repairing the wiring myself we could not really go any further with it until that was done.

Now it is repaired, what am I looking for on a STAR?

Anyone have any ideas where the MAF sensor is?

Thanks

Ian

Anyone have any ideas where the MAF sensor is?

MAF is between the engine clean air pipe and the air filter. Are you sure you did not work with the MAF wiring actually or was it the the pressure sensor downstream of air filter perhaps?

Note that Vito is well known about all sorts of engine compartment wiring issues, short circuits here and there. But if the car goes to limp-home-mode, perhaps MAF is a more likely candidate.

Hi,
I think it was the pressure sensor, just a small plug with three wires that went into a small sensor that I could acctually unplug the whole sensor from the air pipe. It just looked like a little nozzle. Nothing like the MAF units I have seen on here.

I will have a root around and see if I can see anything. Luckily I have a big can of electrical contact cleaner :)

Hi,
I have had the main pipe off from the air filter to the engine and althoutgh there are 2 electrical plug connecotrs on there, there is nothing that looks like the pictures of the MAFS I have seen on here.

Any ideas?

Ian

Oh Joy, I have just called the dealership to see if it has a diesel poarticl filter on it and hey presto, it has :(

Hi,
I must have bought a pile of crap.

Three and harlf years old, 43k on the clock. Owned since new full Merc Service history.

Just been told by the main dealer it need a new turbo and rear diff seal.

Total cost £2k

I think I will part exchange it for a quality van like a Ford or a Vauxhall.

I did 90k in my old 111 vito, never had a problem.
my 115 sport, no problems.

Don't just think if it needs a turbo it needs new, get second hand or better still get yours rebuilt buy a specialist, Google it.

Ford, vauxhall
