Evening All,

I thought I would share my bad luck with my new to me Vito. Recently purchased and completed 500 miles before the engine has completely seized. Its a 2012 Brabus with 172k and really good history. To cut a long story short I have removed the engine and pulled the sump to find No.1 main bearing has spun. Gutted is an understatement. No warnings or oil pressure light, just cut out and stopped.

Its made a mess of the main cap and the crank has taken some heat and metal transfer. I'm currently looking at options ranging from a second hand lump through to a new engine,,,,,£££££££.

I'm researching what engines will swap into the van, as far as I understand anything with an OM 642.8 will work without swapping cams. I could really do with speaking to someone who has carried this out before as I have no confidence in internet mechanics. :D

Has anyone got an engine for sale that will work for me? I not keen on having mine rebuilt as I'm not sure on how well line boring will work unless anyone can educate me. Pictures to follow.

Anyone that helps you on an internet forum is only ever going to be an “internet mechanic” so might find the guy who can help the most, may not now reply. I’ll assume you didn’t mean it. Line boring can be done very successfully when carried out by a professional, you would need a good firm for the crank re grinding etc anyway. Of course this is all a waste of time unless you can be sure of what caused it to run dry of oil in the first place, obviously you would have to have all the oil ways cleaned, Only takes a small piece of gunge left behind to cause another problem. These engines have been around nearly 20 years now so there many second hand ones about, of course you can never be sure of the life they have had. I would think (but cannot be 100%) that they are all pretty much the same when down to just the block although i guess there might be small differences in how the ancillary’s are fitted. I hope this helps but as you know enough to remove it and strip it down, you probably know all this already

Looks run to me.
