Help.i have no reverse when engine warm, when first started no problem but after 10 mins or so reverse dosent engage.drive changes with a jump but still goes up the gears ,noticed what seems to be atf on the nearside but cant find where its coming from.are there any weak points with the piping for the cooling i could be looking for .Any advice would be a blessing at this point.thanks

I can't read this without punctuation. Am I getting old??

hardtoread?

Perhaps. There is some punctuation, all the commas and full stops are there. No spaces between sentences, though strangely there are spaces before commas.

By not capitalising (apart from the opening plea, "Help." and the second last sentence) thedoc01 has saved 4 keystrokes plus 4 keystrokes saved for missing spaces. In a 70 word post this equals a bit over a 10% saving. Of course that is a saving for the poster and doesn't factor in the cost to the reader, in your case a 100% loss.

Common sense tells you that when seeking assistance you make it as easy as possible for others to offer assistance, so a properly punctuated request would be my choice.

But what do I know?

Hi, I have much the same problem. Reverse is fine when cold, but when hot it feels like it's engaged reverse ok but it slips like a badly worn clutch on a manual at anything other than very slight accelerator pedal pressure. All forward gears are fine hot or cold.

I've replaced the fluid/filter to no avail, and have been told that the box has to come out to have the reverse 'band' replaced. Is there anything tricky about removing the box does anyone know?

Similar for me. I have the 722.5 gearbox.

In my case, it's fine when cold and often fine when hot. It's in between that reverse MIGHT not engage.

My next step is fluid and filter replacement as these are long overdue. If that fails, it's big cash time.

Took car to garage where they removed the gearbox. A friend who's worked at mercedes for 40 + years stripped the gearbox and found the reverse k3 clutch was worn and that was the problem not the actual reverse band. 200 notes for removal and refitting of the gearbox and another 200 for parts and labour and alls well.

Cheers for providing an update doc, glad the CE is running as it should.

Great news, I do fluid and filter change every 2 years, a slight paranoia with my 5 speed box, just waiting for that 4th gear to vanish.
Luckily for me I have an Autobox specialist who is well adversed to the 722.500 unit and he is based 300m from my office. So far I have yet to make that call to him for a rebuild.

Long may your coupe keep a smile on your face.

Thanks, thedoc. I'm quite new to the world of these beautiful cars and just got myself a 1991 300 CE 24, showing all these signs! I wonder could you put us in touch with your mechanic friend?

It's quite common for the plunger in the valve body to cause this problem

Thanks, trapperjohn. I'm in Wimbledon in south west London. I very much appreciate the quick response!

Or you could always pop up to harrow if you fancy a drive :)

Blimey! Thank you very much guys. I shall give James Leigh motors a shout and take it from there.:bannana:
BTW, who's in Harrow? Is that yourself, alf230? You know about these things?
