W124 500e

Went to see this last weekend - wasn't for me :( 300 miles each way too

what put you off??

Possibly, the smoked rear lamps units...

Sorry I've no idea what put 500E off but those lamps are a good start. Why, oh why, do people need to fit those things to a car like that I'll never truly understand.

lol tbh thats what i thought you would say, they look awful

Nah I saw past the rear lamps and the smoked indis...

Happy to put a longer write up but it wasn't fully as described, had no history apart from his own receipts and the underneath unfortunately had quite abit of rust which put me off. The front end is quite badly stone chipped and the pillars need attention.

The drive was nice and quiet but didn't quite have the power/urgency a 500E should produce. Far from it actually. It has an ASR problem where the light popped up once the car was warm and didn't go off which unfortunately kills the ASR (or fortunately?!) and after doing some reading I think this disables the ABS too.

A few other things made it not worth it for me but the owner was a nice guy. I ended up walking away and I got offered the car at a v/good price but I didn't think it was worth it.

I am an absolute lover of the 500E but looking for a car in better nick.

Cheers,
Bill

You'll be wasting your time with 500E's under 10k. Its the same story over and over, people buy them and thrash em, then can't afford to pay for the maintenance and stick em up for sale.

You'll have to dig into your pockets for a mint 500 - and there aren't many left.

^ agreed.

I'm not too bothered about them like I used to be. My E46 M3 is plenty quite and super mint to boot. So hoping to hold onto it. Wouldn't mind picking up a fixer upper 500E at the right price to slowly build up. But when your asking the price for this one it has to be in good shape.

Unfortunately as the prices go up on the good 500's, so do the 'fixer upper' ones. Then your only left with the serious money pit 500's.

Looks like a good honest car though, light clusters aside.

Can't be many 1-UK owner/15 year cars like this.

Sounds like it wants a few £k spending for some TLC but I guess it could be worth it long term :)

ASR is a bigger issue than the seller makes out... Diagnosis can be a pain even with a Star Machine...

I drove myself potty trying to fix mine... fault codes kept blaming other control units...

In the end I swapped so many components I cant even remember what cured it... Think it may have been the "base control module" Luckily loads in the USA for sale...

Yep, that's generally the way with anything special in a rising market. But, I have to admit it's a model I'd really consider taking a punt on in the lower price bracket, it's just that type of car and I don't think even if it cost another 50 or 100% again over a couple of years to get right, I wouldn't be upset.

Of course I can justify it with simple 'man maths' anyway ;)

Now if it was a 3.6...

Niks I had a chat with Francis about his e500 but I got the impression he wants an arm and a leg for it lol!

Does sound like a stunning example though.

yep, because its a well and truly sorted 500. He's had all the little niggles on it sorted out and now its one rapid car!

I do like the early 124's with the bigger grill. Potentially a very nice car. That grey/cream colour is still one of my favorites, reminds me of my old M3.

Question regarding the cancelled bid situation in the advert. When you bid on a car are you are entering a contract? Or is that only after the hammer falls?
