E320
Hello new here, I hope you don't mine me asking a couple of questions:)
I've just bought a W124 E320 and the auto (5 speed) seems to be doing some odd things
It won’t change down no matter how hard I floor the pedal and it changes up very early. I also don’t seem to have a 5th gear!!. Changing manually works fine. I suspect the cable linking the throttle to the gearbox is at fault but would that effect the loss of 5th gear?.
Anyway I’ve got the car booked into Trident Automotive tomorrow for them to have a look but any thoughts would be very much appreciated.
Apart from the gearbox probs it's a superb car and I can see why people like them so much. It really doesn’t feel 13 years old.

Thanks

Chris

I think you are right with the cable adjustment issue I would also suggest checking the transmission fluid. Have you tried putting the gearbox into standard mode (S on the panel beside the gear lever)

I did try and check the ATF but it seems that a dipstick was an optional extra on this model.:)

Switching between S and E doesn’t seem to make any difference. On the plus side pushing the gearstick over and down into third doesn’t half make it fly:D

I'm glad you agree it sounds like the cable as auto boxes are all a bit smoke and mirrors to me

Chris
What year is it? I was under the assumption that all 124's had a dip stick. Go someone tell me I am wrong.

<checks logbook>

March 93 It was first registered. Its on a K plate. There's tube for the dipstick but it just has a cap on top.:(.

Gulp, you have a dipstick missing :o

MB autobox dipsticks probably go for a fair permium on EBay:)

You've got me pondering now, my gearbox goes P R N D then over to the left to 4 3 2. That is the 5 speeder isn't it?

Yep Sounds like a 5sp...:)

part no

If your box is the 722.5 type then see here.

There seem to be 3 part nos which are all related in some way in MB part no speak. i.e. they are all the same part
A 1262700083

A 1402700383

A1402700683
if you look on the site at the 300E it seems to have the same part no- 1402700383

I tried this number in the mercdes online parts site http://www.mercedes-benz-parts.co.uk/default.aspx
but it failed to come up with anything unfortunately!

Cheers for that, if its the same as the 300E one then that's easy, I'll nick the one out the the wife's 300TE:D , anyway its in the garage tomorrow so I'll mention it to them.

sorry for all the questions but.....

Right then its back from the garage and it needs a 1000 quid rebuild:eek: .

Apparently there's a 'valve body' problem so the gearbox is not getting enough pressure to change so changes up early:confused:.

Thinking out loud here, I'm a little confused about the diagnosis, if there isn't enough pressure then the box wouldn't change at all would it?

Anyway I think I'm going to go for a second opinion so if anybody could recommend a good gearbox specialist near either heathrow, stafford or bolton it would be much appreciated.

Alternatively is it worth dropping it into a MB dealer and seeing if there are any fault codes for the box?

Thanks for listening

Chris

Chris, your best bet would be to check with our very own Dr. Ian B. Walker's 124 Works. He will probably save you a lot of money and hey, if you are lucky, it may not be that serious but you would need somebody honest like him to tell you that!

Good Luck,

Asif.
