W124 auto selector illumination

A quick question.
Should a W124 light up the gear selector position on an auto?

I noticed the other night that I can't see where my gear selector is at night.
The figures are lit up but shouldn't I be able to see if it's id D or 3, etc?
Do W124s have this?

My old Rover had a little red translucent bit of plastic to show the position.

when you change the bulb, its a good idea to unclip the surround and give every thing a good clean inside the selector.
