I have a 1995 E280 that has a problem with the ventilation system.

The fan runs fine on all speeds, but it seems that the air cannot get into the car.

Even on full spped, only a small amount of air comes from the vents, and turning the direction selector on the dash seems to have no effect. On previous 124's I have had you could hear the flaps changing and moving, on this one - nothing.

Does anyone know hoe the direction selector assembly works?

Thanks

Richard

My guess is that the vacuum actuators that open and close the various flaps aren't working. This could be something simple like the vacuum supply is disconnected. However if one of more of the vacuum actuators is leaking and needs replaced then its bad news since you need to dismantle the dash to get to it! A few posts on this recently. heres a link also to a pictorial how to http://photos.orange.co.uk/shared/browse.html?c_album=1259925

Older cars that have the standard HVAC (not automatic climate control) with the two big rotary controls on the centre console use a purely mechanical system. There are two cables from the back of the distribution control to the shut-off flaps in the ducting. If this is what your car has it's possible some part of the mechanism has become damaged or disconnected.

I believe some blower units are fitted with a dust filter, so that's another potential suspect.

Or some ducting could have come loose so that most of your air is being blown behind the fascia.
