Apologies if this has been covered before, but I couldn't find anything using the search.

I just need to know if these are the right trim clips for the W124 side cladding?

MERCEDES EXTERIOR DOOR MOULDING TRIM CLIPS 124 W124 | eBay

If so, are they the only ones needed and how many of them for all the cladding on an s124?

I noticed some of the cladding was a bit loose when cleaning the car so thought I'd take the opportunity to take all the cladding off and clean behind before replacing. Having read others posts, it's seems better to have enough replcement clips ready and waiting.

I would go to the dealer, but always feel a bit of a knob when the parts guys spends 20 mins on epc to make a 50p sale.

They don't look right at all for a late car. The top and bottom clips are different. The bottom one has a prong, the top one has a metal arm.

The dealer won't be making a 50p sale when you buy all new clips. The front door cladding is held by 30 odd clips and they're in the region of £1 each.....

i would (and actually plan to do this) remove your cladding and see what good clips you have left afterwards, and then buy the rest from the dealer.

these clips are strange, my car is with wright tech at the moment and i have a missing clip on the front drivers side cladding, it looks very messy, but when i took it in, Andy said he thought that the cladding should slide over the clip and not push in, but the clips on my car push in. confused? i am

i go with Silversaloon

take off your panel and see whats there and see what you need,

sorry cant be of more assistance

The bottom ones clip off, the top ones slide IIRC.

Whot he said ^^ ---Slide towards the front then lower ones clip straight on.

they look like the female ones that attach to the moulding that then clip on to the male "bayonnets" on the door.

ps go to your MB dealer---- if I remember they are priced individually and there are quite lot of them so cost can eventually mount up. Removing the trim to see exactly what you need in the way of replacement is good advice.

Perhaps the following may be of help to you.

Front & rear wings

Cladding is attached to each by a total of six fastenings top and bottom.
The top three are attached to cladding and fixed to the wing.
The bottom three are fixed to the body and clipped onto the cladding.

In both cases to remove, pull from the bottom edge that is the farthest clip from the wheel arch - i.e. at the door, because cladding is hooked round wheel arch at top. When the bottom three clips are released, pull the top clips from the door end.

Refitting requires the 'hook' to be aligned first, followed by the top fasteners, (bang cladding with side of fist), working from the wheel arch to the door.

Door

Unscrew the phillips screw at the bottom trailing edge of door. Pull the cladding from the seven fasteners along bottom edge of door. As with the wings, it makes a hideous cracking sound. Use a wooden spatula to prize them off.

When the bottom seven have been released, pull/slide the panel rearwards along the door for about an inch. The upper fasteners are located in a sort of keyhole arrangement so the panel will simply be released.

Refitting is straightforward reversal - locate the upper keyholes, slide forward, then bang in the lower fasteners using the side of your fist and replace the screw and washer.

Outer cill

First, snap off inner tread plate that is held in a channel to reveal the upper row of Phillips screws.

Second, locate right under car, ten 8mm hex bolts and washers and undo.

Third, two fasteners each front and rear are attached to outer cill, but will probably come off and remain on body. Pliers are required to remove and reattach to cill prior to refitting.

Under tray

Undo the four 8mm hex bolts. With panels off, take opportunity to clean jamb between front wing and door. Remember, Mercedes did not finish these hidden areas with high gloss paint.

This is quite a big job if you intend to scrupulously clean each and every component prior to refitting. Check paintwork on the wheel arches and along bodywork where it comes into contact with the cladding.

@W124nut, great write up, much appreciated. Now I know how to do it, I'll risk takign them off and replace only the broken clips after I get a full tally of these needed.

On another related point, does anybody know if the cladding panels and sill covers from a saloon also fit an estate?

There is a saloon in a local scrap yard, so I thought I may use that for practise, and maybe get the panels off it (and a handful of clips) to get them sprayed so I can simply swap them over. I already new fornt and rear bumpers awaiting spray and fitting.

Thanks in advance.

I just checked partscatalog.ru and the saloon and estate share the same part numbers and for sill covers and cladding.

Hi,

Reviving this old thread.

Can anyone advise on where best to source these outside of MB direct?

Best,

adil

I have a feeling these clips are made for Mercedes by someone like Würth? Might be worth speaking to them to see if they can supply them for less than the main dealers if you need a load of them.

No idea if they are on here but gives you an idea of the bits they do:

The other option is to go to your local breakers yard and get some there. This will also give you a practise run at removing the cladding. Better to break the car in the scrappy first. Invaluable places for dismantling practise.

or a local car being broken on ebay.
