W124 E320 Sportline Estate

Perhaps the current owner is suffering from big bills fatigue?
The car is undoubtedly well specified but further bills lurk I fear.
The incorrectly parked wiper mechanism being the obvious starting point.

Surely a wiper mechanism for a W124 wouldn't be considered as a 'big bill'?

Under £50 secondhand, 1 hour to fit?

HG, loom and gearbox are the main worries (and rust I guess) - if those are ok/addressed it's got to be a good start - not sure about the asking price though :)

As much as I like W124s, I just can't see it being worth three times what I paid for a V-plate 2-owner 100k miler E320 Avantgarde a couple of years back? It's not as though this one has been especially cheap to maintain going by what those jobs must have cost the seller either!

I said a STARTING POINT! ;)

Definitely a good starting point, though I do think to get near the £4k mark the seller is going to need to refrub the wheels, polish it up and take some decent photos that sell the car a bit better. I reckon the wiper is just a case of switching the car off with the wiper in mid sweep. If not, and easy reaplacement any way.

I see a few potential problems that the seller seems to have missed

The car has aircon and cruise but no mention of either in the description, these can be costly and difficult to fix and diagnose. Id be put off by the light grey leather (personal)

Although it seems to have had a new front screen at some point in time as I cant see any clouding

Head lamp washer look aligned and the headlamps them selves look in good nick

Think he is a bit optimistic on price though

Also doesn't appear to have memory seats, or heated, which are a use if you want top wack IMO

How much will this be worth in 5 years Will and the same goes to your 210 (If it`s nor rusted away)

I paid £1420 for my '99/V E320 Avantgarde, nearly two years ago.

If I still have it in three years it will have paid for itself :D

Don't forget 124s rust as well Dash :) Jacking points, inner wings, outer wings, tailgates, alongside the rear side windows etc.

Running cost wise, an older/higher mileage 124 like this one will have had a fair few expensive running costs too - just like the seller mentions - loom, head gasket, auto gearbox etc.

I do like these cars - just don't think that they're such good value these days - IMHO of course :)

My last W124 (300TE) was a great old workhorse, but that was £320 - not £4k :o

Will:All I`m try to say is that is very hard pricing these cars, they keep selling so there`s demand for them.Yes they do rust but so do the 201 ;) but nothing rusts nowhere near to the 210 :p

Now back to the car,can someone ask the seller if he bought the car in Birmingham few months ago as if so the loom has only been repaired and not replaced

Yep - all old MBs rust and I agree the 210 rusts worse for it's age especially compared to some of the older models. IMHO, pre-facelift 124s seems to have better paint, mechanicals and trim (I know many will not agree! :))

All I am saying, is that personally for me I don't see the value for money in that car. For me an estate car is a workhorse - it should be slightly tatty in order that you can use it properly. I sling all sorts in mine - old wheels/tyres, fence panels, doors, cement mixers, garden rubbish, furniture etc. Lend it to friends etc for moving stuff about - I am not precious over it.

If that was a 124 coupé or cabriolet, then I agree it's a classic. I know that the estates sell for good money but I think the time is nearing where they aren't quite the practical choice they once were 5-10 years ago - they are old cars now. And who wants to sling all sort of junk in a £4k 124 - you'd ruin it in and feel guilty making it tatty :o

Lee is only asking £500 more for this, which makes that W124 seem expensive to me:

And this is my 210 estate. Yes it's not cosmetically perfect, but it's more than presentable enough for what I use it for :)

This to me is how an old estate car should be used (my first 300TE :D))!:

Everyone is different, but that is just the way it is for me :thumb:

Everyone has their own opinions of how a car should be priced, what it looks like and what it should or shouldnt have, or how it should be used.

Someone may be willing to only pay £500 for one as thats all they see they are worth, and use it to death..

Someone else may be willing to pay around £4k for one and use it as a proper family car, the school runs and big tesco shopping spree's.

Then you'll have the lot who would spend up to £7k for a complete low mileage minter, for those long touring holidays, to cherish it and replace every nut and bolt which is about to go wrong - usually the "i will never sell it" types.

Even if this car came with all the toys, heated seats, electric seats, ortho seats, sportline interior and so on knowing that sort of a spec car only pops up once a year or two, someone will still say "its only worth £1000".

Its a never ending debate that will never have a conclusion to it. All we know is these cars are getting harder and harder to find year by year, especially the good ones.

They will go the same way as a decent Volvo Amazon estate, when they have all rusted away, then all of a sudden, the few that are left will rocket in price.

Personally, I love the W124 estate, but my choice would be an earlier and simpler car which is more usable.

I understand it is the rear sub-frame mountings that are now really killing W124's, someone told me they are extremely difficult and expensive to repair properly.

he's an Opera buff too

How do you know?
I looked all over for the clue :)

That 635 is very cheap I think. They make good money and the spec and mileage are great.

or indeed a w123 estate - up to 15k for the very best and not many good ones left

I think a most people into w124's would not buy a 210 so its a different market. +
