Perhaps it is just me getting used to it but does your W124 have a fair bit of throttle pedal travel before the engine responds, and then when it does there is quite a surge? I am thinking that my throttle linkage might need greasing?

Yes I experienced a similar surprise when first driving a 3.2 litre W124 auto some 4 years ago. Lots of initial wheelspin even though my car starts off in second gear.

I have got used to it and so now don't notice.

My cable is adjusted as per the manual and I keep the complex muti-levered network of ball joints in the linkage well oiled.

Perhaps your cable does however need adjusting and the ball joints need oiling.

Funny that - the throttle "balance" on the 300E is possibly the most perfect we have ever experienced. The cruise control isn't working at the moment but Carol says that the throttle is so well balanced that she does not especially miss it

MERCEDES throttle "dead" band.

They all do that sir.
Strangely on this occasion its true. All the older mercs I have driven have had a "dead band" on initial throttle uptake. You soon get used to it and learn to push thro it to where the take up point is. Does make going back to a car with a sensitive throttle interesting tho.;)

Mr Walker did some adjustment on mind, and it got rid of most of the slack.
I think i have something wrong with my pedal, its very very hard to the point to which my dad refuses to drive it. Will have to get that looked at, but ive had the cable changed already, any ideas?

I'd change the cable then clean & lubricate the throttle linkages. I have a suspicion that the cruise control unit affects the pedal feel as well

This is frequently a problem on E220s for some reason

Its the same case on the SEC. I've replaced the linkages (it doesn't have a cable) and lubricated all the joints. Still the pedal didn't feel very smooth or soft, so i disconneted the cruise control linkage and hey presto, it's silky smooth!!

With regards to aka$h's W124, i've personally lubricated all the throttle linkages, and clenaed up the throttle body, but the pedal is still rock hard!!

Thanks for all the shared experiences glad it is not just me. The pedal is fine after approx 1/2" but you then need to be delicate or the wheels will spin!:D

I guess she just "balances" the pedal nicely on the floor.:D
