W124 E36 AMG estate Project

The track record for older mercedes appreciating in value is typically convertible followed by coupe. Unfortunately, estates do not have that desirability which will affect value

The estate's hold the value much better than the coupes, especially the 6 cyl
Example:How many 320 estates do you see for sale??

I can't see it selling for £8 to 10k after the work has been done, it has no body kit and the AMG suspension it had is probably shot now.

It would still make an interesting E36 estate though and in my mind (for what that's worth) it could sell for £5 to 6K once finished.

And what's it worth now? I've no idea but if I were after it I'd baulk at paying more than £1,200 for it. Maybe £1,500 at a push.

W124 estates are nice, but I just cannot really see the appeal of an AMG one. They're useful load luggers and comfortable cruisers - not sports cars. Is that why they only sold seven? :o

I am talking about appreciating in value - these cars are still depreciating. There will come a time when they will appreciate. When this occurs the convertible will be the one that appreciates the most followed by the coupe. The estates just don't have that appeal or track record.

I don't think its worth much more than 1.5k in it's present state as it needs so much work. I was thinking of buying it as a source of spare parts for mine but have nowhere to store it. Also mine just keeps running like clockwork despite 267k on the clock!!! They are really great cars - love mine - but agree probably have a limited market. Unfortunately they will never make big money and so when they fall into disrepair like this one the restoration investment doesn't stack up unless bought as a keeper by an enthusiast.

If it was driveable and doable as a rolling resto it would be worth buying, as a tow away with no loom etc it's just too much effort. I wouldn't mind betting there are a whole bunch of horrors over and above what the seller has listed. It just screams money pit.

If I was desperate for one of those I'd just buy a cheap c36 and use it for an engine transplant into a nice spec 320 estate.

The problem with that is this car is a genuine E36 on the VIN it wouldnt cause a problem with insurance, whereas a car with an engine transplant would be counted as heavily modified, you'd need to notify DVLA etc.

How much would a good condition good spec 320 cost and how much would a cheap C36 and labour add up?

You're probably right, but with that e36 estate, the list of jobs outstanding is only what the owner knows about. It hasn't been used regularly for nearly 5 years, has no loom and nearly 200k on it, and doesn't look like it was exactly cherised when it was on the road so imagine what else is lurking. Essentially that car needs a full restoration, which simply isn't worth it. I love w124 estates as much as anybody, but this one just doesn't make any sense on any level.

Although rare, and it would be great if someone had the inclination to save it, it would have to be someone doing it as a labour of love on a toally irrational level.

Avantagarde cars don't seem able to shift a mint E36 saloon at £12k or a mint E36 coupe at £13k and they both seem like bargains compared to this estate.

To my mind that car is worth the scrap value of it's interior, which it's already exceeded on ebay.

It’s a purchase for a MB specialist who can do it up bit by bit or when the business is slow. A schedule of work needed is a must as well as commitment to finish it; otherwise it will end up forgotten in the back of the workshop.

This will be a great project for somebody.

yes- a labour of love. There isnt any getting away that wonga will have to be pumped into it.

Really, engine aside, I dont think it will be that bad given all the 'common' 124 issues are taken into hand. Its what you would expect at this age and milage.

Perhaps the greatest satisfaction on a car like this would be to do in chunks over a period over a couple years.

(unless you are feeling lush or want to get kicked out by your missus)!
