its on german ebay but the seller claims its a 4.2 v8. is this true as i thought the v8 was in the e500.

Yep, it's got 8 cylinders.

The E420 never came to the UK because all V8s where LHD (excluding a few specials). We tolerated LHD in the E500 because .... it's an E500!
