Hi

I have 2 W124 estates.

One of them is sitting much lower one side than the other. I've looked under there and no sign of a damaged spring or anything - so I presume its just "sagging".

So, i want to change the springs both sides at the front. The car already has new springs on the rear, fitted last year.

I like to do stuff myself but know W124 springs are a bit of a "job".

I was wondering if the following compressor will be OK for the DIY enthusiast:

US PRO Professional 5 Piece Coil Spring Compressor for Mercedes US6200

As i have 2 W124's, each with aging suspension on the front, i feel it may be worth investing in a tool to do it myself - however the tool needs to be under or around £100 to warrant me doing it myself i think..

opinions on the use of this tool welcome :)

thanks

derek

put "mercedes spring compressor" into Fleabay and you will see numerous similar ones at just under £100 here in the UK.

They look the part.

Derek - just a philosophical point; I always view expenditure on tools as almost an investment. You'll always recover a good proportion (say 50% minimum) on resale of good ueful kit. I will be buying on of these soon. I fancy the Franklin Tools, Sheffield, set. I think springs, like jacks and stands, is one area where having the correct tool is esential. No good saving garage fees but taking your teeth out!!

I bought one of these exact same tools. I used it half a dozen times and now it lives in Finch Motors Tool chest so gets used regularly.

No quality complaints.

This 'type' of compressor is what they used to change mine, have to say that it is a real learning curve and not for the faint hearted if it starts to slip around especially when you are compressing the new spring. Very sorry but I did not take note of the make of the compressor.

thanks all - i have purchased one and a pair of new springs so will report back of how it goes.

I did one on my 124 It was a nightmare of a job and definitely not for the feint hearted Positioning of the compressor on the spring is important it is very fiddly and you sweat when your near that compressed spring You know how a bomb disposal expert feels when you lift it out
