E220 Cabriolet
I own a late E220 Cabriolet (W124) which has the keyless door entry and alarm system. Recently my immobiliser "baled-out" causing a certain amount of havoc to other electrics - thankfully not too expensive !
My mechanic (BSG in Ladbroke Grove) disconnected it.
I'd like to fit another immobiliser since I gather that my original will be very difficult to replace.
Can anyone recomend a suitable substitute which will work alongside the existing Merc alarm (which incidentally is working OK). It would be great if something that doesn't require another fob/key was available.

The alarm/immobiliser system is normally an AFTERMARKET dealer fit in UK models. It is armed/disarmed by the MB infrared remote locking system but essentially an independent unit/s. Your best bet is get a completely new alarm/immobiliser system set up to be triggered by the MB remote locking system. If its a non UK model things may be slightly different.

I think you will find it is only the alarm that is retro-fitted, and the actual immobiliser is a Mercedes original fitment on that generation of car.

The retro-fitted alarm is interfaced with the original equipment immobiliser.

Which of the actual MB components of your system is fooked?

Avital MAXX 1

I have a '95 E320 cab which I recently had an Avital MAXX 1 fitted as a replacement for the 10yr+ old Clifford alarm that was u/s. Does have a separate key fob but it co[exists with the standard central locking and I have had no issues. Includes a passive ignition disable if you don't set the alarm but doesn't lock the doors if you leave your key inside. Also has a mute setting which keeps the neighbours happy in the early hours !!!

I think there may be three components here: RCL remote locking, immobiliser and alarm. The RCL unit is under the rear seat, the immobiliser is in the n/s/f footwell and the alarm, AFAIK, is all in the whooper under the bonnet

You may be able to replace just the immobiliser as, AFAIK it's not coded to the car expect on very late models with DAS

To replace the RCL you need the brain, keys and lockset plus the VIN number of the donor to order replacement keys in future

It's just the immobiliser - which is a MB box that has failed. BTW I was advised that these immobilisers weren't particularly effective since they only isolate two circuits

Why not just replace the MB box. A pattern part might do just as well. Probably only a couple of relays activated by the alarm to break the 2 circuits. Any good vehicle alarm specialist should be able to do this for you. My feeling is unless your insurance states otherwise keep it simple. Complex aftermarket alarms just increase the chances of leaving you --the legitimate driver stranded. A determined professional thief is either going to steal the keys/ duplicate the security code or simply trailer your pride and joy away anyway??

you state in your first post that original immobiliser box will be hard to replace.

why do you say that ????

put the part number up here and someone can check availability and price for you.
