Hi everyone,

I'm slowly fixing every issue my 220E has but i now have a rattle in the shifter, it is a bit loose and the rattle gets so bad a certain speeds, i have to hold it with my hand, and push it a bit towards N to get the noise to stop. I am aware of the two bushings that usually go bad at each end of the rod between the shifter and the transmission but the noise seems to come from the shifter itself. Is it an illusion or can the bushings inside the shifter go bad as well?

The other noise comes from the rear passenger side door. Sounds as if it wasn't shut all the way and slightly knocks, mostly on acceleration/braking but also over bumps and crappy roads. Sometimes it stops doing it for a little while. This noise is driving me bonkers and i don't really enjoy driving the car at the moment. I sat in the back seat while someone else was driving and tried to pinpoint where the knock comes from but it's really hard to tell. I thought it was coming from the lower part of the door, close to the striker but it seems to come from the front of the door when driving so i really don't know...

Thanks! :D

Regarding the rear passenger side door noise does the rear passenger side window open and close as you would expect? Have you taken the door card off and checked to see if the window regulator's mounting points are all tight on the door shell? The door cards come off (by pulling vertically upwards) once the door handle and door striker surround trim bolt and screws are removed. While you are in there also check if the door glass to window regulator fixings are not loose.

Thanks, The panel was remove before and i think there's a loose bolt, probably the check strap. It sounds like it's coming from the front. I'll report when the noise is fixed.

The check straps are easy to replace once the door card is off .Also they are repairable if you have a strong vice to put them in to take apart ..The balls in side, and the track they run in go rusty and will need polishing and give them lots of grease nefore refiting ..But if it is you want to buy a new one try and get those with a plastic cover on they stop any water ingress .

Rattles in a W124, you must be hearing things. Best to get a hearing check and mental assessment

The door striker can go bad in these cars. It's metal with rubber that surrounds the sleeve and could cause your door to rattle. For the shifter, maybe you dropped a coin in there.

Yes, sometimes i have to go in other cars from the same era or even newer and i understand what rattle means. The shifter rattle comes from a bushing completely missing at the end of the rod between the shifter and the transmission.

That would do it and cause some sloppiness too. Cheap and very easy fix
