My 320TE had one of those smog pumps fitted to the side of the engine, despite it being a RHD UK registered car. It seized earlier this year and I simply took the pump off and bought a shorter belt to fit the remaining pulleys as replacement pumps at the time were really expensive. It sailed through the MOT last week with the same low emissions as before the pump was removed.
Which begs the question, if a reasonably priced pump came up would any of you bother to replace it, or leave it off permanently?

My view would be to leave it off. It seems this air pump thing was only a temporary thing when MB had gone totally "grün" and barmy and followed it up with biodegradable wiring that biodegraded from day 1.

My impression is that this costly part works only for a few seconds on start-up.

Any old way, mine's still OK, apparently, so it's staying put. First sign of trouble and it'll get its marching orders.

In your case, save the cash for something impertinent and drinkable.

drinkable - I like that - a man after my own heart.

My later model E320 coupe (Aug 95) does not have one fitted - it came from factory like that.

As Ray said, it was a temporary 'thing', then discontinued.

Thanks guys, decision made, and I've got plenty of beer money instead of buying another one of these pumps
