I have a 200te 1993 and it started to intermittently cut out. Then the other day it started but instantly died, every time it started it would just die. In the end I just kept the starter turning as it fired and died continually and it started. Its done this a few times now. Its a petrol auto

When you turn the key to the ignition position can you hear the fuel pump buzzing momentarily from under the right rear wheel?

The pump does. More info, sometimes she stalls if you leave it to idle it idles lovely for a while then the revs randomly rise and fall for a couple of seconds and it will stall. It will restart OK and we are back to square one. It reved up as i was reversing, not good in an auto. The revs rise to about 1500.The emissions are fine, it is regularly serviced and the fuel filter is about 2000 miles old

Which engine have you got? M102 or m111?

Did you fit a genuine fuel filter?

Lots of potential causes - throttle body, MAF, fuel pump, fuel pump relay, crank position sensor, etc

I use to have a BMW E23 and it had all sorts rough running, miss fires, stalling thumping auto gear changes etc. I changed all the vacuum hoses and a recon AFM solved the problem.

I am not sure which engine it has. How do I tell? I always use genuine parts. I though of air leaks but the emissions are spot on and I thought they would be off with air leaks

Had those exact symptoms on my BMW 540i.

A new cam position sensor cured it!

Good luck.

That's the single cam M102 engine. Symptoms sound like a fuel pump relay fault --- its 2 stage----- 1. primes the fuel system while the engine turns over 2 after it receives an engine running signal it switches to a different circuit to maintain supply to the fuel pump. Symptoms sound as if that is not happening. The surging probably comes from a faulty idle regulation valve.
checkout this its the W201[190] manual which covers your engine despite it being a different model:- http://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/outside/11832/?requestedDocId=11832

That was my initial thought Graeme hence question in post #2: but the answer given kinda threw me off the scent since I presumed the FPR returned to the pos 1 condition after engine start. :dk:

Sorry the symptoms are so wierd, that's why it stumped me. All the faults are intermittent but becoming more frequent. The cutting out happens it seems as you arrive at lights etc. Where is the pump relay? I know where the ovp relay is but not fuel relay

The faults are pretty weird and threw me. They seem to be slowly getting worse though. The cutting out happens as you approach lights etc. Continuously cranking the starter through the cutting out will eventually keep it running. Where is the fuel relay? I know the ovp is by the battery but where's the fuel one? Thanks for the help so far.

Its in the same area will have kickdown and 4zyl marked on it [ no fuse like the ovp]

These are behind the battery
