W124 wiring advice

I'm a little bit confused now guys, when you talk about pins 1-4 are these just the pins in the seat connector from left to right following a Z shape ?
Pins are numbered - you can see the numbers in your picture
 
wires crossed :) Thought you were talking about the pins in the connector that would have plugged into the seat
 
Regarding the seat connectors - 4 pin - I'vbe just checked my unused harness. One seat has pin 1 BnY, 2 KVi, 3 KVi thin + KVi thick, 4 Bn. T'other is 1 BnW, 2 KBu, 3KBu thin + KBu thick, 4Bn

By the way my relay is yellow- possibly an earlier type than yours - A0008206226

Think there may be a clue as to your W126 query. Your pic shows 3 pins connected in the 'special equipment' 5 pole plug, one looking a bit reddish, so poss seat power. Mine only has the 2 - light (GyBu) and switch power (KY) as explained above.
 
So are KVi, KVi thin and KVi thick all just positive feeds ?
 
I would suggest so. Why not plug the 2 pins on the 5 pole connector to a battery poss, together with the feed harness red wire. You'll need to join that harness's pins 4 & 5 together (see Benzworld link pix) to make the circuit of course as they should go through a fuse. (Sorry - forgot you already have the fusebox) .Connect up the 1 pole feedto the main harness, and the main harness brown wires to ground. Then switch on and meter the supply at nthe seat connectors for pos 1 and pos 2. That should show how to connect to the non OEM pads.

Apparently depends on mode selected? IMO you're best bet is to connect one mat to pin1/pin2 and the other mat to pin3/pin4, because that's how original mats are connected.
 
Honestly I'm not sure - might be like post 11 says, needs to be tested really. But if stock pads are wired that way then aftermarket must work as well?
 
Makes sense if that's how they are wired. If you're able to check on yours I guess that's definitive. As you say, metering the outputs of Shanksy's set up is prob the surest option. Off air now. It's almost 0100 here!
 
I remember because I was testing resistance on original pads. I can recheck tomorrow to be sure.

Thanks for your help tonight guys, I guess all that remains is for me to just bite the bullet and see how I get on Saturday, obviously hoping to come out with toasty buns and a cracking guide for anyone else planning the same !
 
Seat connector pin outputs

I checked the outputs as the title says just now, using an old 12v 24Ah golf battery and my original equipment loom (yellow relay). With pin 4 as ground, heat position 1 (single red) gives 12v at pin 1, nothing at 2 & 3. Pos 2, 2 reds, gives 12 v at 2 & 3, nothing at pin 1. 4 is brown and does give continuity to the ground bundle at the end of the cabin harness. This does suggest that the theory of 1 being wired in series to both pads, and 2 and 3 being wired to squab and back pads respectively may be correct. I couldn't check the current because I have no spare pads here to provide a load (they're in the car, and working nicely!) and also I'm not sure if my DMM max amperage is sufficient (10A).

As per PM, attached is a pic of how my seat connector is wired from the back; not what I was expecting to see, with pos feeds going to pins 1 and 4. Were your's different ?

These are my seat plugs, but I think you'll find 12v to 1,2 and 3, and 4 is ground (brown wire) which you can confirm by continuity. I think yours are exactly as mine. Perhaps double check what you said about pin 4? Maybe a trial with a jury rig on the garage floor or a living room chair(!!) is called for to see what different wiring options give you. I did this and used my wife's bottom as a suitable measuring instrument.

As crap as I felt today, I decided i'd try and get as much of the harness laid as I could and then experiment with connecting up the pads.
Didnt get too far unfortunately, managed to get the seats out, part of the centre console and the trim under the steering wheel.
Took ages to get the heater / lights dials out then had a surprise visit from a friend so lost most of the afternoon :(
Heres hoping I get more done tomorrow !
 
If you're experimenting with pad connection - try connecting them like the original pads. pad #1 to pin1 and pin2 and pad #2 to pin3 and pin4.

Managed to get the majority of the harness laid today, i'm now left with just the 12v feed to hook up somewhere.

I may be being a bit dim here but with the trim beneath the steering wheel off, I could not see the fusebox underside ? Pic not great, not enough battery on phone to use the flash:doh:

I had a thought on the 12v feed though. I had a towbar with the electrics wired when I got the car. Since then i've removed and sold the bar but the wiring was just cut and pulled into the boot and just taped up.
If I followed this wiring back from the boot, would I likely have a 12v female connector I could use to hook straight into ?

@Brigadier - I'll check the seat connectors when I get my multi-meter back tomorrow but i'm guessing your W126 harness was fine without the 12v feed section as I bet thats what the 3rd pin was while mine only had the 2.

Jeez that was cold this morning :cool:

The 12v feed goes straight into the fuse box. I'm certain the harness for the heated seats was supplied with the fuse block with the actual fuse. There will be an empty slot for the whole block to fit into the box..


Is this what you are having trouble with?
