W126 AMG Options

Just bought a 1990 W126 420SE in need of a bit of tlc, I'll be sorting the mechanicals in the first instance but after browsing the t'internet I think the W126 with AMG kit looks very cool so I'm very interested in any information/sources for parts and, even though I know it's a bit of an ask, just general knowledge really. Transplanting a newer AMG engine is also a (very expensive) option.

From what I've gathered so far, the AMG kit is interchangeable between the coupe and the saloon, and the side skirts are extendable so they will also fit both.

I've looked at period AMG alloys and it seems a choice between Pentas or two-piece Monoblocks.

Again, I'm just looking for info so I'm open to learning anything regarding this generation of AMG.

You have a nice original W126 with plenty of potential for improvement but any of the above will just be desperately barry !

I've got a good set of 2 piece monoblocks if you're interested pm me... should be a great project!

Pre merger genuine AMG parts & cars are definitely not Barry.

I can't PM you due to your lack of posts...

Message admin and they will enable them (hopefully!)

I agree with your first point about it having potential but I think the 1980's pre-merger AMG's are very cool.

Or maybe I'm just a little bit Barry as well!

One of these day's I'll spot you driving around Doncaster. I never know what car to look for - but I'd spot a Barry'd 126......

I do prefer the car as it is - bit my tastes are always standard and others differ :D

Lee, pre merger AMG's are awesome looking cars and much more interesting than yet another concours w126.

I say you should build yourself a slice of 80's looking exotica, and if you think it needs a modern engine go for it.:thumb:

The car in question has never been an AMG model and never will be.

I suspect therein lies the crux of carat's argument. Before the merger it wasn't a case of pre-defined models (C43, E55 etc etc), AMG were a bespoke atelier who offered a wide menu to cherry pick from.

I'm not at all sure how that is relevant since this particular W126 has been an entirely non-AMG car for the past 25 years.

It's entirely relevant.

You consider a car modified by an aftermarket tuning company as acceptable, but yet an enthusiast who builds an identical car, using the same parts, you choose to label as "barry".

The Mercedes w124 that AMG modified into the Hammer was "entirely non-AMG", until it was re-built by AMG into the car we all know now.

Back in the period of the pre merger AMG cars, a car only needed to have 2 amg items fitted to be classed as an AMG car. There is no such thing as a genuine AMG w126, though there are w126's that have AMG modifications.

It'll all really come down to how much the mechanical tlc amounts to, although on first impressions it doesn't seem exhaustive (time will tell though...)

Out of interest, would the four speed box in this be in any way related to the four speed in the C36? If I was to transplant an AMG donor then it'd have to really be a V8, but I'd still be interested to know.

Yes they are related, both are a 722.3.

Your right about a v8 though, perhaps a m119 5.0, m117 560, or an m113 55 lump?

Interesting....;)

Although from what I gather, this 420 has 230bhp and if I was to transplant an engine then I'd be inclined to put something with 350bhp in as opposed to 280bhp.
