W126 AMG Options

For me, M119. Direct fit to a 722.3, simple electronics to get it running, potential to be at least vaguely period authentic.

The M117 is pointless, the 113 could be fun but potentially a wiring nightmare.

How hard/technical do you think it'd be? If you were in my shoes, which engine/box would you put in?

The m113 55 engine would need an aftermarket ecu to run it, and if you used it's gearbox a controller for that too. The actual fitting of it is the easy part, but the electrics will swallow £3k.

The 600 v12 from the early w140 is a better bet. If you buy the right donor car you'll have everything you need to make it work. The w140's ecu can be wired in to a w126 fairly easily, the gearbox is not electric, and it is the more powerful of the 2.

The early m119 is also a good option, same work as the 600 to fit it.

The 600 swap is what I would be doing in your position.

Barry lives here...?

It's entirely relevant.

You consider a car modified by an aftermarket tuning company as acceptable, but yet an enthusiast who builds an identical car, using the same parts, you choose to label as "barry".

The Mercedes w124 that AMG modified into the Hammer was "entirely non-AMG", until it was re-built by AMG into the car we all know now.

Back in the period of the pre merger AMG cars, a car only needed to have 2 amg items fitted to be classed as an AMG car. There is no such thing as a genuine AMG w126, though there are w126's that have AMG modifications.

I think this in danger of turning into a long, drawn-out discussion on a subject upon which we will never agree. However, any talk of original or non original AMG parts and W126s, W124s or anything else is irrelevant and unnecessary since the situation is much more simple than that.

If you start off with this.....

And end up with this.....

....then you've barried your car.

And since we are hijacking Lee's thread as he searches for AMG parts (that I hope he now decides never to buy !) I will bow out.

Not possible because the Lee's car is an SE and the other one is SEL

Would there be any snaps of the new car please?

I'm a big fan of keep it original - but I expect any mods will be done properly with genuine bits, so the proof will be in the pudding.

Complete w126 kits are notoriously hard to come by on own and unless jay or talbir have something knocking about you will probably end up having to buy a donor car to get the kit so I'd hold off any decisions about the engine til you have the kit sorted.

Yakuza look all the way IMO much better than than the Phil Collins miami vice

The proof will be in the pudding; it's going into my indie tomorrow and the bodywork will be getting investigated one evening this week, the bodywork will make or break this project.

Good luck with it Lee - its your motor so do what you want with it - barry or not.

Might be easier to start with this car?

Hmmmm... Now the haze has ascended, and after speaking to others, the cost of the AMG mod would be silly compared to starting off with something halfway there already.

On initial inspection the mechanical costs will be more than I'd anticipated, so to throw a few grand at the car as well could be detrimental to my financial health. Even as cheap as the car was, it's still a project that could easily spiral past £5k (£800-1000 wheels, £1000 body kit, up to £1000 being finicky with mechanicals, £1000 paint, £1000 for unseen headaches) and then there's a potential £2k engine transplant....

Lee,

My SEC is a similar age, and I have just got a bodywork quote to do the following.

Front wings
Rear Wings
Rear bootsections/bumper hangers (you need to take the rear bumper off)
Sections that need treatment on bonnet, boot and doors.
Take all of the cladding off, and see if work is needed on the jacking points, one is bad on mine.
Look at the bottom of the doors, they can go as well, my drivers door needs work.
Rear screen and around the boot, it will almost definitely need a new seal.

My quote was 4k to make it look ok, and 7k to make it perfect (south east prices, and I will get another quote). Needless to say that does not make it viable.

So i am having a rethink, and will probably have a go myself at the prep and paint, and just get the welding done for me.

This is a car that at first glance is not too bad, that said it is all cosmetic at this point.

Good luck with whatever you do

Surprisingly AMG still had stock of the premerger W126 bodykits as late as 2007. I know this is as I bought a complete kit from AMG Germany via my local dealer.

It took 6 months first to find the correct part numbers, get them onto the local dealers system then actually place the order. From memory (and it is hazy) it was circa £2700. But they had no boot spoilers at the time.

That meant I was able to "Barry" my very own 560SEC with genuine parts bought directly from AMG (via my dealer).

I also produced some replica kits after I had molds made from the originals. It's all posted on here under a previous incarnation I had on MBClub.

On the whole it was just a money pit, but I liked it and persevered.

I then came across (courtesy of this forum - thanks!) two brand new old stock SEC body shells advertised on eBay. Thinking this was a good idea that instead of spending loads repairing a rusty old car I might as well start with a brand new shell and make my car a donor car. So I bought both bodyshells, I mean why would I buy just one!

Then I figured if I was starting with a new bodyshell why would I put an old engine in it? So I found a brand new factory Euro spec 560 motor that had made it's way here from Belgium - from here actually.

Home - Garage Van De Velde

Tell Jay never to go there, he'll spend his house on what's in that place!

Of course it never got built so it all got sold.

So you see, it's a slippery slope, you bought a W126 as a bit of fun and a project and the next thing you know you're £20K into it and it's a bit barry!

Just get it on eBay now and save your marriage and your forum credibility as fitting an AMG bodykit to a W126 is only one step away from blue neon lights under the floorpan. Innit.

It's a very slippery slope which I kind of knew (but didn't want to admit to)

If I was to throw at it a chunk of readies, I'd start thinking about buying another 55Kbwith what would ultimately be a similar budget.

I'll get it running right, sort the bits, stick a test on it, run it for a while then shift it on I think.

Let me know when you decide to shift it on pls!
