W202 benz remote synchronising issues

Car
to No.1 brand in reliability
Quick one chaps. Query for a new W202 (1996) owner. Upon noticing the green and red LEDs flashing, he changed the remote's batteries. He did this when the car was centrally locked in his normal parking spot.

Upon changing the batteries, the car no longer responded to the remote at all so couldn't open it remotely. Reading his manual he sees the paragraph about synchronising the remote and the car. He thus manually opened the driver's door using the key inserted into the door lock.

Sitting in the driver seat he pointed the remote at the RVM and pressed the button twice but no visual feedback from the car at all. And thus turning the ignition to position 2 within the 30 seconds did nothing to disengage the immobiliser.

So he is still unable to start the car due to the immobiliser still active.

Someone please help with this - my only comment is I usually change the batteries when the car is centrally unlocked so haven't been in this situation before.

Has he put the batteries in the right way round?
Does the red light illuminate?
Look at the remote through a mobile phone camera and press the button. You should be able to see the infra red led flash.....

If you see no blueish light through the camera, then your keyfobb will have died, the early fobs (with the flip keys) are only meant to last up to 60,000. I had 2 died on me within a week.

I did ask him how did he know the remote was working since it is infra red one can't see the thing light up. He said if you keep it pressed down long enough he can see it light up bright red. Based on Dec's post it is correct then that the remote is working.

The only other thing I have been not able to ascertain is when he says it cranks I can't be sure that the cranking is a healthy one or weak due to flat car battery.

Update - my suspicion was correct - his car battery was flat according to roadside assistance. They claim the immobiliser drained the battery. I don't think this is possible - is it?

we have the same problem at the moment it is in the garage tue what was your diagnosies to the problem thanks martin

hi is it possible to bypass the imobalizer and how can it be done please help martin

All I know is he called roadside assistance and they said the battery was flat. What caused it is a mystery at the moment. I didn't think an immobilizer can drain the battery however I have not been in contact since. Sorry I don't know anything about bypassing an immobilizer - I'm sure this would interest some unsavory characters.

w202 immobiliser

i have had a problem with my 1996 c180. it had a knock and ever since, the immobiliser hadn't been the same. when i unlocked the car with the fob, the red and green lights were flashing on the rvm. i had to disconnect the battery for a while and it would disable and enable for a while once this was done. But it got worse and when i was reconnecting the battery it still wouldn't work. Ive been told roadsie can disconnect the immobiliser, i was allso given the phone number in birmingham of someone who claims they could reset it for £20 by resetting the ecu. But the guy was away and i was desperate so i took it to small mercedes garage and specialist. he said the immobiliser was finished and took him 5 mins to bypass it. also cost me £20, but now i have no immobiliser but at least the car starts everytime! he just pulled up the passengers footwell carpet. cripped a few wires and i was away

hi do you know which wires he crimped mabe it may be the same on my car ,my problem is i carnt move my car thanks martin

Immobilizer

I too would like to know how the immobilizer was by passed. I have a 1995 E200 which is worth less than the cost of replacing the ecu. The remote unlocks both central locking and immobilizer most times, but occasionally the immobilizer stays locked. Disconnecting the battery for a few minutes resets the immobilizer for a while.
Any advice on a permenent reset solution or immobilizer bypass would be apperciated as the problem is becoming progressively worse.

Hi,
Are all your red & green LED's working as they should? As one of these being blown will cause irratic immobiliser behaviour.
As to bypassing the immobiliser, it depends on the wether it is intergrated into the alarm or is separate to the alarm, If it is separate to the alarm you will have a raised collar around the ignition switch.

Immobilizer

The green lights work ok and the red lights work when the immobilizer locks properly. It will then unlock, but mostly when I lock the car the red light doesn't flash and that means when I unlock it the immobilizer remains locked and the car won't start. Disconnecting the battery for a while then reconnecting seems to reset everything and I get a couple of engine starts before it packs up again.
There is a raised ring around the ignition switch and I think the alarm must have been disconnected by the original owner as that has never worked.
