Hi,
Am in the throws of purchasing a w202 c200k tip. sport estate. From my researching I've gathered that the engine in these is a bit of a bas*ard child. I beleive it actually is a 2litre (as opposed to the one in the equivalent w203 being a 1.8), presumably it's the same basic unit as fitted in the non-supercharged w202 c200 but with lower compression ratio(?) Are there any known issues with this machine?
Does the late w202 (x reg) suffer with the same degradation of the wiring loom as my web searches have found happen with the early ones.
The car has 97k on the clock but a full MBsh. It also has replica merc 17" alloys, I've read that fitting larger wheels can cause issues with the suspension, this true or is it just for gangsta's vehicles w. 20" crome wheels?

cheers

Ken

17's are fine. We have another member with a w202 C200K that lives in Italy, I am sure he will reply soon. That engine was only available in the w202 in late model estates.

The w202 has never suffered from wiring loom issues as far as I know.

Am I? :D

Hi and welcome on board! ;) This is really a great forum and you'll realize the same if you'll chose a Benz and enjoy here with us. :)

As far as the W202 Kompressor engine I can say that here in Italy were available at thet time both 230K and 200K similar (I'd say same) performance: 1HP less and a copule of less kgm torque less.

Mine is 191HP. Due to tax problem at that time, it was available this engine. I saw in my owner manual that this engine were available for Italy and Portugal ;)

Displacement is 1998 cc (hey like my nick name ;) ).

I belive that this engine were not available in your Country with this power.

The estate you are looking for seems me are underpowered to 163 (abt?) Hp, also here last W202 C200 kompressor was made with that reduced power, may be due to new environmental rules.

Mine is running really well, not a single proble till now :) I've abt 115000Km.

As far as wiring loom problem I've never heard.

Hope this help you a bit

Hi

PS: here pre-facelift W202 komrpessor developed abt 180-185 Hp, increased to 191 with facelift...and than decreased to latest 163Hp :o

Interesting, so does this mean that perhaps with a swap of ecu (Italian spec?) and a change of pulley, I'll get a decent power increase. I am partial to a few tweaks but Merc tuners seem to charge literally twice as much as any other (my tuning knowledge is of Saabs) and getting ripped off is not a passtime I partake in. The main tuners (Kleemann/Brabus spring to mind) seem to think that £1200 for a 20hp increase is acceptable, it isn't!

From what i've seen recently i would be careful. Certain parts are "cost-reduced" on the lower rated engines, such as the torque limit of the gearbox. I would get someone helpful like Shude to check out part number differences of some of the major components before tweaking. That said, this piece of advice is really particularly relevant for cars produced after 2002.

You're filling me with confidence about the newer MB cars.

What did you expect - Mercedes has to make money too, and in an increasingly difficult economic climate. One penny saved per car = $$$$$$$$$

Hmm, it kept on popping up on US merc websites I looked at

This is the reason I'm moving away from Saabs, once owned by GM in '93 the cost cutting started and the ones before this are too old for a 50mile daily commute so my 900Turbo has to go :(

I'd imagine that replacement supercharger parts are pretty costly so are there any hints for what to look for on this 97thou miler

cheers

There were problems with the wiring looms on early w124 series ... biodegradable ....

Thought the wiring loom problems affected later W124s? Sort of early-mid 90s or somewhere around about then (around the facelift?)

Ken - not sure on the specific output of the 200K you mention, but if it's too short on performance for you it may well work out cheaper to buy a larger engined model from the beginning? Tuning/mods can be fun, but if it's cheaper to buy a bigger/better engined model it loses it's appeal for me :(

Good luck with the car :)

Will

One last question then I'll leave you all alone:
what are the cambelt change periods for these engines and any idea of the of the going rate for this to be done (specialist)?

cheers

Ken

Ah, like the old Saab, so as long as tensioner is checked occasionally and I listen out for new rattles everything is cool. Good news :)

Thanks for your help you lot, better go away and check the bank account

cheers

I fully agree ;)

Why not looking for a C230Kompressor! As far as Italian C200kompressor differences in terms of ECU and pulley respect the underpowered C200kompressor you were looking I don't know how is possible and cost effective for you :)

Considering our engine model were not available in your Country I'm quite sure your local dealer will refuse to help you for any modification respect the factory specification,...yes you can choose other non-factory solutions but, again, at this point a C230K is a better solution!

Hi

Ah, you're right, however, this way gets past the missus easier as I wouldn't get the mods straight away :D

Ken

Unless you are serious, prepared to spend some cash and venture into fairly untested territory (in the UK anyhow) then forget about getting more BHP from that engine.

If you want more power than an average saloon, dont get the 200k, as 1998K says it's not like his Italian varient produced for tax reasons, in the UK it's a far lesser powered model. You can buy late model C230K estates which will be much much more lively to drive, but are not going to upset your wife!

Yes Yes :bannana: :bannana:
