I'm hearing a rattle from under the car (W202).
When idling, if I dab the accelerator, as the revs come back down I hear a rattle from what I think is probably the CAT.

Car has about 94k on clock.

Question is, do I have to buy a MB CAT? They are quite pricey for what the car is actually worth now.

Where can I get alternatives from and which are the ones to go for?

Thanks for any advice.

I would check the heatshields first and any bracketry.

Look on e bay for cat prices, or just a general google search.

I agree with Lynall,my heatshields rattled,so because there is already a floor mounted heat shield fitted, i cut mine off the pipes. I'm not the only member on here to have done this!

if it is the cat, you can get an aftermarket for about £200. sounds different and fruity and may not be very nice, but if your car is not worth much, no need investing about £1k from MB.
I have had one since 07 and it has passed emmisions tests till today

I did have a look under the car whilst my wife pushed on the accelerator pedal.

Couldn't see anything loose that was causing a vibration,
The cat seemed to vibrate as it rattled (but that could just be me).

To make the car sound as quiet as it did originally then yes you would need an MB cat, no matter which custom cat you put, it will always sound wrong, and loud (been there tried that).

I have an original second hand MB cat which i took off my w202 at 62k miles when i upgraded my exhaust, let me know if you need it.

Just had a thought:D let engine cool then get under car and give the cat/s a smack with the palm of your hand and see if it rattles or where the rattle is coming from.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
Will see what my indy says when I get a chance to go over and see him.

I'll try the 'cat smack' test at the weekend if I get a chance.

Oddly enough, car didn't seem to rattle at all this morning.

Will keep you posted.
Thanks again.

Probably downpipe heat shields as has been said. Alternative to removal is a couple of large jubilee clips at both ends squashing the thin pressed shield sleeving on to the exhaust pipe-cures the rattle-but only till they rust thro and fall off after about 12-18months.

Sorry, forgot to update this thread.
Rattle has gone now so assume cat has broken right down to near nothing.

Anyway, did as others have done and just put it through MOT regardless.

PASSED!!
:-)

i removed my dowpipe heat shield and found that my cat has an outer shield that was ratteling so i folded a small piece of tin in wedged it between the heat shield and the cat!
still there a year later!
