Hi, I've got 2002 c220 cdi with a damaged head & piston on one of the cylinders due to a heater plug breaking and being pushed into the piston before I purchased the car I was hoping for a easy fix but unfortunately I will need to swap the engine with a different one.
I was just wondering if I need to stick with the exactly the same year and model of car for the donor engine or have I got leeway with different 2.2 engines across the range for that year to swap my ancillaries onto the block

Any answers will be most welcome thanks

Best going by engine number and the first 3 numbers on the engine need to be the same and possibly the next 4 as there needs to be differentiation for a 200 CDi as well as auto/manual. As yours is in 2002MY and is pre-facelift I'm not sure which engine you will have, whether it carried forward to the Facelift in 2004.

Is your engine completely beyond repair?

Maybe somebody else can help further.

Had to replace an engine on my C240 Petrol. I stuck with the same as I didn't want the hassle of fettling with mounts, manifolds, ECU & gearbox (to name a few) I got a great engine and deal from Dronsfields with next day delivery. Sent from my iPhone using MBClub UK

You need a 203 engine, they have an oil pick up at the back of the engine, while 202/210 have it at the front.

Unless you love your car more than life itself, I would shop for a new car rather than another engine, as the cost of the engine and swap may be more than another C220.
