As you know I bought my w204 6 weeks ago and as I have now driven 2000 miles in it I thought I’d review it.

I started off by checking what I’d said on here about the w204 down the years before I owned one!

25/07/2007 I said “I drove the new W204 today. This particular one is £35,000 due to memory seats, navigation, AMG everything, leather etc etc.
Impressions,
Exterior- Looks OK, has presence but not beauty, prefer my (w203)wheels to the double six spoke version.

Interior- Enjoyed the sat nav popping up automatically, and the memory steering wheel and seat movement, still think the steering wheel is horrid and the plastic on the dash is cheap looking. Felt like a Honda.

Driving- This was a sport but ride s harder than my AMG suspension but smooth with no roll at normal speeds, brakes are hyper sensitive and I'm not sure I like them, steering is so light you could steer using only "the force"!

Engine- C220CDI felt lively and quite quick but is noisy and a bit intrusive.

Overall- A nice car, especially if you haven’t had a Mercedes before, worth £35k? in my opinion no way!

01/03/2009 I said “I have driven the Audi A4, the Alfa 159 and the W204. The W204 felt the most solid and had the best ride. So out of my possible rivals the W204 sport is the only contender. The W204 is better built than the W203 and has a better ride and good levels of kit and at some point it will doubtless be my next car BUT it is not £14,000 better than my current W203 and therefore R2 stays for the time being. Thank you all for your input in this process! “

30/08/2012 I said I decided to not limit my search to only Mercedes because I’d driven 250,000 miles in C Classes and wondered what else was out there. I considered a Kenwood A4 but it was so bland, I considered several Alfas but they were fun but coarse and the build quality still isn’t in Mercedes league and so after months of test drives I ended up positively choosing to remain with Mercedes rather than just buying another one.

……Then one day I was at an independent MB dealer who let me take out various W204s back to back. I discovered that W204 Sports are much firmer than my old Avantgarde even though mine had AMG springs! I drive a fair few long journeys and I couldn’t cope with the Sport suspension every day. He then sent me out in a C350 (Petrol) Elegance which was wonderful. It had proper suspension and ride becoming a luxury car and was a very nice place to be. “

Review.
It’s interesting that some of my thoughts about the W204 have remained constant over the years.

Exterior

Excellent panel gaps, excellent paint quality, excellent practical design. Not a beautiful car but it has a stance and presence about it that I like. I now like the huge mirrors for their great practicality.

Interior
Comand/Linguatronic is wonderful and a big step forward from my w203 Comand APS. My car has the luxury leather 12 button steering wheel which I positively like. I’m sure the first one I drove in 2007 had a plastic horrible steering wheel. The seats are well made and comfortable. I’ll tell you how comfortable after a Scotland run! The dash board in general is well made; however, it does have occasional very minor rattles. The plastic along the door tops is too hard and cheap looking.

Ride

In my Elegance Spec car the ride is awesome a great place to travel long distances in. I found the Sport ride with 18inch wheels just too hard for everyday use, however, it too is capable of a smooth ride on good surfaces.

Handling
All w204 have adaptive shock absorbers as standard and some have the switchable version as an option. My standard car handles very nicely at anything short of reckless speeds. If pushed very hard it will lean and understeer slightly. I’m happy with the very high threshold of understeer and accept it as being necessary if want my ride quality.

Engine

C350 V6 petrol. I love the sound, I love the 0-60 in 6 and the top speed of 155mph. I like the 36mpg on a run I dislike the 14mpg on a thrash or in stationary traffic. I’ve averaged 25mpg so far; my C180k averaged 28mpg.

Summary
My w204 is a natural progression from my previous w202s and w203. All of my c classes have been excellent, reliable, and safe cars. The w204 builds on the previous models by being a bit better built, a bit safer, a bit better build quality. Overall I think the w204 is a great car in many ways. I still think some of the cabin plastics are hard but otherwise it’s been a good purchase. As Autocar said several decades ago when the w202 was launched "The C Class is a great car to drive and an even better one to own". I'd still have to agree!
What's the betting that my next car is a w205 even if I try an Alfa and an Audi first?:)

PS. When I bought my C350 Elegance, it was 1 of 103 in the UK but I noticed that this 1/4 the number dropped to 102. Presumably someone wrote one off or exported one.

I have had my W204 sport plus estate for around 2 months now and agree whole heartedly with your assessment.
My previous car was an Alfa 159 TI which was a beautiful car to look at and own. I desperately waned to stay with the brand but they have discontinued the model.
I considered a number of cars before settling on the mercedes and I must say I couldn't be happier with my choice. I wanted the power of the 250 and the sport plus spec gave it a bit of 'Alfa'.
I now realise that whilst the 159 was amazing to look at, incredibly comfortable with beautiful leather recaro seats, it was not perfect, there were little niggles that I overlooked that I put up with because I loved other aspects so much.
What I have now is a car that whilst I cant say I love it like the 159 (I don't feel the urge to look back at it when I walk away after parking it) I do have an incredibly well engineered vehicle with a great engine/gearbox with more practicality with great equipment level.
In short it is a car without compromises, I like it a lot!

Thanks. I share your love of Alfa, I really adored my old 156. Never a true petrol head until you have owned one of course! Good to hear that the MB is working out well though, can't wait until I get mine. Enjoy! :D

oh and forgot to add that I like the 7G gearbox though I know not everyone agrees!

Greg you should go and see David at D-Class and have those horrible pieces of plastic re trimmed. He is a great guy and does a fantastic job.

His work on the CL was first class and not as dear as you may think.

It would just finsh the job off.

Good review R2D2. As one of the few fellow facelift W204 petrol owners, I have to ask how you know how many Elegances there are?

I'm totally with you on the sound and performance of the C350 V6 Petrol. And yes, petrol consumption varies a massive amount depending on use. I make sure there are no consumption displays in view when I have the Sport button pressed! But the ECO stop-start does help a bit in very heavy traffic, so apart from when cold I generally achieve low 20s in town.

I'm surprised at your comments on the harsh ride of the Sport. Although I've never owned an AMG, I've driven lots of them. My C350 Sport is much more compliant than any AMG that I've experienced. Even this old pensioner finds the Sport very comfortable in standard mode. Perhaps the Dynamic Handling package that I have is making the difference. Sport mode tightens this up a bit, but still not to a level that I, nor any passengers, feel too hard. I'll admit that it wouldn't be too wonderful in Mongolia (from where I've just returned after 3 weeks) where the potholes are deeper than the moon's craters!

After 6 months I still love my C350 Sport Petrol Saloon. The interior looks better than any other car I've ever seen. I don't like wood (plastic or real) in any car other than a Morgan and a few vintage models, so I'm delighted to have brushed alluminium instead. I much prefer the COMAND Sat Nav as a feature of the dash rather than a pop-up afterthought. In fact my only complaint about the interior is some of the ergonomics. All the switches look fantastic, but I wish the Sport button was next to the gear lever instead of way over towards the passenger seat!

As a very good friend and fellow petrol-head commented, my car is a wolf in sheep's clothing. It looks good, but it doesn't have the WOW factor until you start up the engine and press your foot on that right stainless steel pedal. :)

The V6 Petrol has plenty of get up and go. I have had two occasions when I have had "that" feeling you get in your stomach when you are accelarating Very fast indeed.
Re. Numbers remainding the "howmanyleft" website has the DVLA data upto the previous quarter so you know at any time how many are left. My car is listed as "C350 Elegance A". Look on your logbook to see how the car is described. If it is C350 Sport A, then there are 162 in the UK.

Thanks. The HowManyLeft site shows a total of just 52 C350 Sport Blueefficiency Autos (as described in my log book) licensed in the UK! That could account for why I haven't spotted another one yet.

It perhaps isn't surprising that MB dropped the V6 in the C Class as all variants together probably come to less than 300.

Still have it in the Coupe. Just not available with the handling package option which is, as debated elsewhere at some length, madness

Finding out from the "HowManyLeft" website how many of your particular car were registered and how many are still about isn't too straightforward. For instance in my particular case there are many different versions listed that could include mine. It's only when you look at the "New Registrations" tab you can get a better idea. Knowing that the facelift model was released in 2011, I look through them all and see that there are three designations that had cars first registered in 2011 & 2012:"C350 AMG SPORT BLUEEFFI-CY A", "C350 SPORT ED 125 BLUEEF-CY A" and "C350 SPORT BLUEEFFICIENCY AUTO". (116, 16 and 52 respectively.) But there's no mention how many of these were saloons, coupes or estates. It's also confusing because the AMG designation was only introduced for the 2013 models that were first released earlier this year, but the "HowManyLeft" site lists 58 of them as having been registered in 2011!

R2D2's pre-facelift W204 Elegance is a lot easier, with the choice of just "Auto" and "A" as the suffix options (10 and 102 licensed). Still no way of knowing how many saloons or estates, but at least I don't think there was a coupe version in the mix!

As for the noisy, smelly oil burners, there were 883 facelift sport models registered in 2011/12. Common as muck! But not as bad as the C200 CDIs of which 1819 were registered in 2011/12, and nowhere near as common as the C220 CDIs which amassed 2941 in the same period!! No wonder so many of you say how good they are, there's a lot more of you!!

The C220 is an outstanding car. I cannot think of a better car on sale :)

You need to reduce the level of your medication.. It's clearly affecting to ability to think sensibly ....

Just realised last night that my heater controls are illuminated. I'm sure they weren't in my w203.

Some 203 did have illuminated vent wheels, some didn't. Never found out why!

Worst car I ever driven

The merc w204 sport which I think looks great is ultimately deceiving and a very poor car to drive. Rock hard suspension. Awful noise from the tyres which is a nightmare and nothing but unhappy people who don't actually don't want to travel in the car. Every bump is like crashing into a brick wall. I can't even take our young baby out in the car seat as the car crashes over every bump and it upsets our toddler. On the rare occasion we travel on the motorway people begin to feel sick and ask the driver find the seat positions impossible to comfortable which always creates bad lower back pain. I've changed the tyres tried everything. It's honestly the poorest car I've ever driven . How a so called top manufacturer like Mercedes can claim this car is good is beyond me. It's a disgusting bad poorly made car and thanks to Mercedes we are no heading to court the dealership are being I pretty evasive.

To put it bluntly they can have there car back after they didn't want to buy it back we took matters via the ombudsman and a court tribunal date has been set. Very odd how Mercedes sell you a car but don't want to buy it. On the plus side there own staff admitted the ride is exceptionally poor. So why lie to me and sell me a Car Knowing it would come back to haunt them. Very very poor service from a rude German company who thing they are above everybody.

Mercedes Benz you gone downhill with your poor quality and I would not buy your product again
You do not even come close to BMW or Audi.
Awful car -poor quality all round- rude staff and dealership and merc customer service is shamefully poor

Whilst the W204 in sport guise is firm, I find the ride quite comfortable, in fact it is the most relaxing car I've ever had. I did a 650 mile virtually non-stop drive from Scotland back to the South coast a couple of years ago, and whilst not quite as fresh as a daisy when I got out I certainly wasn't in any discomfort.

oh well i have a w204 c250 estate and love it
