I have the Garmin Satnav system on SD card. I have read in another thread that there are updates to fix a couple if bugs and also a "firmware" update mentioned.

Are firmware and software the same thing in this case?
Are updates easy and safe to do online (firmware/software and mapping) or do need to take to dealer. I have a card reader on my PC.
Do I go to Garmin or Mercedes website.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi,

The software update refers to the actual Garmin map data held on the SD card. There is a Mercedes/ Garmin Web site where you can check for map updates and download them via you PC. Mercedes recommend that you do this on a regular basis to keep up with the latest release. However when I upgraded mine and put the SD card back in the car (W205), the map data was at a more recent version than the car's firmware was expecting to see and was consequently unable to read the SD card. I forget the error message but you'll know what it means when/if you see it. The Dealership were aware of the issue and had the car for a day to download and upgrade the car's firmware. This resolved the problem. It may be that your car already has the later version of firmware and you will not get the issue. Either way I think you are better to check for the Garmin software upgrades and apply them. If you then encounter the error it's over to the Dealership but at least your maps will be up to date.

OK will do. Many thanks como.
