Hello, everyone. I am looking for information regarding reliability of two specific versions of W205. C200 BlueTEC and C220d 2014-2018.

I am completely in love with W205 design and when I buy one, I really plan on keeping it for as long as it will run.

Which version between the two could generally be considered more reliable (especially engine) long term?

TIA, M

C220d for sure

The C200 is a 1.6 Renault unit. Utter shite honestly

What kind of driving will you be doing? Annual mileage, town or country, short trips, longer runs?

A 5,000 a year school-run and shops vehicle is one thing.

A 20,000 a year daily motorway commuter is something else.

And maybe a “joy of driving country roads at weekends” is somewhere in between.

While the Eco warrior townie has a different agenda?

I usually do around 30000km a year. Mostly longer runs. Most often 60km runs.

For the most part I drive economically, I push it only here and there, when the mood strikes 😛

At that mileage the C220d should give you good economy with reasonable performance. I wouldn't opt for the 1.6 C200 on any case

The 220d is the perfect choice.

Lauded across Europe for economy and reliability. Should be good for 15 years use, if you can be bothered to maintain it.

The petrol is better for low mileage, short runs, and city use.

The 1.6 C200 bluetec is a diesel. But of course a renault engine, not particularly known for its reliability!

My opinion of the om651 (220D) engine is that is overly complicated and designed to boost labour charges.

There are sensors galore and they in themselves must reduce reliability. Some are placed such that when they go down (as nothing lasts forever) the access might well mean engine out is the way.

Add to that the simplex timing chain with known tensioner issue.
The plastic inlet manifold that's known to crack.
The plastic fuel filter housing that can leak.
Actually aside from the plastic sump there are a few more possible gremlins.

I am surprised that reliability is considered good as I perceive the engine has been designed to 'attempt' to meet emissions requirements for reduced tax and to either increase MB's revenues for remedial works or persuade buyers to sell on before they get more than a few years old. I.e. replacing with a new MB.

I am more than happy to be corrected on my perceptions, but feel it should be those with good experience of actually repairing these.

Truth is there are few bullet proof engines these days of any make. Diesels are more complex than petrols but petrols have their faults too. My son has just had a fairly common failure of the Vanos system at 70,000 miles on his 135i BMW.. About the best you can do is either pick one with relatively low repair costs or take out a warranty.

Apologies, I stand corrected.

I was thinking back to the launch of the W205 back in 2014, when only two versions were on offer, the C200 Petrol and the C220d diesel. A very good friend has the C200 petrol and he loves it to bits for his low mileage pootling about.

However, as has been said, the C220d is probably still the better choice for your driving than the C200 diesel that you've been considering.

Best wishes - and thanks for correcting my mistake.

Actually, the original C200 petrol was a 2l version of the M274, which, apart from initial petrol leaks and an inaccessible thermostat seems to have been mostly reliable in this country. However in the States, they seem to have had massive gudgeon pin problems; some engines were repaired and others replaced.
