2021 C300 AMG Line Night Edition Prem +
My third C class (this one is my first W205, is just coming up to 2 years old.

Its a while since I posted on this site - so I thought that I would give a little update.

Its a 220d AMG line with P+ pack in Hyacinth red, 19" rims and privacy glass.

I deliberately avoided a bundle of driver aids, if you need help to stay in your own lane, then IMHO you shouldn't be driving!!!

I have covered just over 31K miles.

Faults so far have been just two of the door handle LED's that failed and these were done under warranty with no resistance. Services have been routine - rear brake pads at the last one a few weeks ago, a pair of wiper blades and tyres, (see below), thats all.

So - what have I liked and disliked over the two years of ownership.

The car was made in Sth. Africa, which initially made me a little uneasy, but I have to say that the fit and finish is as good as any car I have ever owned or driven. Given that the only failure is related to a component problem, there isn't any doubt about the way it was screwed together.

The additional 895 quid for the Designo Hyacinth Red struck me as ultra steep, but it does look wonderful and the paint finish is excellent, it also seems far more resistant to chips and scratches than my last two c-classes, (both iridium silver).

I was sort of persuaded into the 19" rims and I think they look terrific, but that means that the car was delivered with Continental run-flats. They don't have lubricant inside them like some run flats, they rely on reinforced side walls that are capable of being run without air pressure for around 50 miles or so. If I had known that these tyres would (a) ruin the ride, (b) wear quite quickly (c) be pretty noisy after about 10K miles and (d) cost more than a grand to replace, then I would have given them a big wide miss.

At the first service around 15.5k I was advised by the dealer to have my all wheel alignment checked as all four tyres were wearing more on the inside edge. They would happily do this for me (for 195 quid + plus the cost of any required adjustments !!, on their super laser alignment jig). Given that the tyres were already getting thin, I decided to run them out and get the alignment checked when I replaced all four tyres.

A few months later, I bought a set of Yokohama Advan Sport 105s, (these were fitted as standard to my previous W204 and I rated them), from Black Circles and had them fitted by my usual tyre company in Rugby 500 pounds less than the Continentals. They have the same laser alignment equipment (manufactured by Hunter) as MB use in their dealerships - just painted red instead of silver. They produced a report that showed all four wheels in the green zone for alignment - so I could have paid over #200 to MB for nothing. The tyre dealer (TW Tyres in Rugby) provided the full alignement check for free when you buy a set of tyres - result.

With a puncture repair kit in the boot, we set off with the new tyres - quite a transformation, much more compliant ride, quieter, good feel and so far pretty good wear.

Having lived through two summers with the car I really don't like the Artico plastic seats. Its about the only thing I dislike about this otherwise brilliant car. For a close to 40K motor I do think that proper leather should be available. Whilst the artico is visually convincing and seems to be durable, it's still plastic and gets a bit sweaty and sticky. MB you aren't fooling anyone really and its about time that you offered the options of proper leather and/or good quality velour type material which at least breathes in hot weather. Plenty of other premium brands offer cloth seating material across the spec range, done properly, which I'm sure MB would, it wouldn't smack of cheap skating like artico sadly does.

So overall - a very happy customer with just a few very minor gripes.

Would I have another - yes, although my next car is likely to be something like a GLC.

Worry I have is that the C, especially since the recent facelift, like everything else, is becoming a bit overburdened with technology, which is great but costs a fortune to rectify.

I think there is a market for a model line that provides all the comfort, looks and convenience features but avoids too much technology - e.g. I love my memory seats but I can live without the weight of the motors, the electronics that can go wrong and the cost of fixing them in a few years - useful if the car has multiple drivers, but for the majority, the motors get very little to do. Just one example - ambient lighting is another.

It seems that the marketing men work the specification lines so that if you don't want a lot of features then you will have to have a plain looking car - its all about bundling and extracting a bigger wedge from us.

So there it is two years in and, like my previous two Mercs - a good experience - you get what you pay for .................- most of the time!!!

Very interesting. I must say you've raised several issues which are reasons I'm fearful of changing my car.

I too quite fancy a GLC but I'm not having one until I'm convinced they're sorted out the crabbing issue.

What tyre place in Rugby do you use?

Doh. I should try reading your post properly.

I've had mine for about six months , no problems yet, but agree with what you say.
Mine was pre-reg ,50 miles, and came with the dreaded Artico and 19" AMG alloys. The ride was hard and picked up any undulations in the road surface.
Recently swopped over the 19" for 18" with normal tyres - what a difference in ride comfort.
As for the "technology" my first job was to disable the control pad in the centre console , kept touching it whilst driving and skipping music tracks.
As for the facelift - more technology and way too much on the steering wheel.Otherwise love the car and the 250d with 206bhp and 500Nm of torque is very swift.

I've had three C Class cars over the years but in between there have been other brands.

Current car W205 (just completed two years from new) is a great car, and in brilliant blue on a sunny day, raises lots of appreciative comments.

I have leather seats and no problem, seem to be good quality.

What I would say is that this car is a whole lot better than my previous Jaguar XE which managed one problem after another and eventually I took a loss and got shot of it.

In fact the only problems I have had were rattles and bumps from RNS. One proved to be a plastic cover underneath which I secured with a cable tie. The other seems to be the boot floor which seems to jump when I hit those sunken manhole covers. A couple of strips of Velcro has stopped that, but there is still a bump noise there which I can't place, worse with a full tank?, I'm not sure.

My tyres are continental 225/50 R17 W seem good but is there anything better when it comes to replacement?

I have had my S205 c220d since new and is now just over 3 years old....touch wood....other than servicing....and new tyres its been as good as gold...its brilliant blue premium plus...lots of toys...mind you I have only done 14956 miles....its by far the best car I have owned so far

Good right up. Mine is almost the same except I stayed with 17” standard wheels. It rides very well on these, specced airmatic suspension which is worth it IMHO. Car has been faultless over 42k miles in two years though the start/stop rarely works now being Amber/disabled nearly all the time and the dash is starting to rattle. Agree all these modern cars could be a headache when they get older.

Then you’re not going to buy one. They’re not going to completely change the suspension and 4Matic system geometry. The most you’ll see is a change in tyre

I read somewhere they've messed the front diff up in the RHD models - the LHD models are fine. I was hoping they could sort it out.

I bought a used 1 owner C250 AMG Line P+ estate in May this year, bought it from one of these car supermarket places.

70k racked up when I bought it, original owner had it as a company car from new hence mileage. I am super impressed with all aspects of the car, never ceases to amaze me how many compliments I get about how it looks.

No real issues with the car, although I have lost two of the door handle LED’s which I understand is a common thing. First service for me was Aug which was an ‘A’ and completed by Avantgarde Automotive MB Specialist - no issues with that although rear discs and pads were low.

Changed them using MB parts which I thought was fairly reasonable at around £325 all in.

Car has winter rear tyres (fitted by original owner) so will be interesting to see how it manages when the weather turns. It’s so competent at doing whatever you ask of it, there is plenty of power and it will cruise happily.

No real gripes with mine, I don’t like the chrome so that’s going in a couple of weeks - gloss black vinyl wrap in its place. Wheels have had a cheap spray over refurb, presumably before handing it back to lease company, and this has stated to lift. Mon it goes in for all four wheels to be stripped back to bare metal and powder coated gloss black.

Should all tie together much better, I have polar white with cranberry interior which I went out my way to find and really pleased with it.

Burmester is a peach to listen too as well!!!!!!

Great great car.

Yes, I agree, the Burmester sound system is excellent, forgot to mention that in my original post.

I would have a serious look at Yokohamas, they were fitted to my last W204 as original equipment, so MB recommend them, they are reasonably priced, (for a premium brand), are quiet, compliant and seem to last pretty well. If you are all about handling on the edge, then I can't really comment, but as a tyre for normal drivers I think these tick all the boxes. Yokohama Advan Sport 105S

I saw a grey C200 yesterday in grey with all black trim, badges, everything - I have to say it did look good, subtle but different.

If we didn't have so many potholes I'd be quite happy with the 19" rims. As it is, I wouldn't be surprised if thefronts need straightening... again. Strong likelihood that I'll change them for 18" five-spoke rims next year.

Other than that, I too am very pleased with our S205.

So I dropped the car off this morning for the wheel refurbishment!!!!!

It left my driveway looking like this -

Will post the updated photo after collection.

Ok so the pic isn’t showing?!? I pasted the Imgur link into the ‘pic link’ box - any ideas why it won’t show??

Need to get the de-chorme booked now to tie it all together, also have the satin black exhaust finishers on order and trying to remove the chrome strip on the boot to have it colour coded polar white. I really really love this car!!!!
