Hi guys,

I'm looking at a 54 plate CLK 55 AMG Coupe

The spec is as follows:

'54 reg car, but has the facelifted dashboard & four tailpipes
58,000 miles
Silver
Good to excellent condition
Only option above the normal AMG 55 is keyless go, there is no COMAND/parktronic.

It is on for £23,000. This is at the very top of my price range and I am happy to wait for the correct car.

Many thanks

Alex

Incredibly difficult to value IMHO. I have been offered anywhere from £21k to £28k trade-in on my 03/53 CLK55 Cabriolet with 55k miles and plenty of toys. Best I can suggest is to search autotrader and compile a list of comparable cars, specs and prices. Also bear in mind that there is fairly hefty service around the 60k mile mark, so make sure that you aren't having to replace disks, pads, spark plugs etc etc shortly after buying it.

As usual, service history essential...good luck!

Welcome to the forum!!

Try the free Glass' valuation from www.vaxuhall.co.uk

My gut feel says that's a lot of car, for little money. I can see why you're tempted.

'+' Keyless Go but '-' COMAND seems strange, but you could get COMAND retrofitted easily if you have a burning desire. Drop member Alfie a PM or visit COMAND.co.uk

I don't think the mileage is any cause for concern providing it has full MBSH. I would suggest making a quick decision regarding extending the warranty or opting for Service Plus.

Reason being Service Plus has been withdrawn for AMGs - or at least it was in September 2007 - whether it's back I'm not sure. The cost will be prohibitive though on an AMG (not true for non-AMGs).

Moreover the cover offered by the MB Warranty changes if it's taken out on a car with more than 60,000 miles (Tier 2) - not as comprehensive as Tier 1. If you extended the warranty at 59,000 miles it would be Tier 1 for the duration of the warranty!! ;)

Good luck with your decision.

Good points!!

Discs and pads are very expensive on AMGs and are a key contributor to the hikes in Service Plus costs on AMG models.

In addition to spark plugs (there's 16 of 'em), if it's not already been done you need to budget for an auto transmission fluid change. Together that'll be around £500 plus the service.

If it's a B-service you'll probably be looking at close to another £500 (or £1000 in total) at MB dealer rates (assuming brakes are OK).

Depends on what you classify as expensive - considering what they are bringing to a halt and the fact mine have lasted the best part of 60k miles, I don't think they are too bad...BUT if a car is at the top of your price range already, then you need to be aware that disks and pads for an AMG are £250 for the parts and around the same again for fitting depending on where you get them done. Add to that the service, assuming nothing else needs doing, you are looking at £1k as a starting point for the 60k service, front disks and pads.

I priced these all up last week as part of my "go / no-go" decision for trading my car in...bear in mind that these are prices in Scotland and labour rates at a MB dealership are cheaper in Perth than pretty much anywhere else in the UK.

I forget the details but I think my fronts-only were close to £500 by the time they'd been fitted (MB dealer rates).

I suspect it would be close to £1k for all four corners - that's what it cost on our ML too.

I agree it depends upon what you classify as expensive. If you buy and expensive car you can't expect to run it on a shoestring, but even so when it comes to handing over the cash - which will inevitable coincide with a service, it can make you twinge. Well it makes me twinge!! :D

Welll...I did suggest £500 for the fronts...fitted...

Most dealers seem to use CAP...anyone know of a source?

I got told by a number of dealers that CAP showed £29,250 for my car with no alteration for mileage this month...but then went on to say that they'd deduct £2k for it being "high mileage".

Long shot... is that the one on at Car Giant?

Many thanks for your responses everyone - really appreciated.

I had originally been looking at a C32 (which I still like very much and may well return to) and then an early CLK500, but then I saw the AMG..

The front discs looked brand new, although the rear were a little worn.

Ah, decisions, decisions! I will be sure to let you know what I decide on.

Thanks again,

Alex
